Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) / the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Economic Sciences is seeking to appoint a full

University Professor for Materials Design

at the Institute of Structural Durability and Railway Technology of TU Graz, starting from January 1, 2020 at the earliest. The position is based on a permanent employment contract according to Section 98 of the Austrian University Act (§98 UG).

For this position, we are seeking a highly qualified and scientifically well-established individual who is deeply committed to further developing the field of ‘Materials Design’. The research topic should reinforce and complement existing fields of research of the institutes ‘Structural Durability and Railway’, ‘Materials Science, Joining and Forming’, ‘Production Engineering’ and also ‘Materials Physics‘ together with the fields of Expertise ‘Advanced Materials Science’ and ‘Mobility and Production’ in several of the following areas:

  • Multiscale modelling of innovative and new materials
  • Modelling of additive manufacturing
  • Materials modelling and simulation of processing and service conditions
  • Process chain simulation as a basis of lifetime calculation
  • Materials Design to Manufacture in rail vehicle engineering

We are seeking a person who is highly qualified in education, scientific activity and professional practice with relevant international experience acquired from industries, industry-related activity or university research. Our expectation is for engaged representation in the field of “Materials Design” in research and in teaching. Furthermore, we expect strong teamwork skills together with experience and willingness for interdisciplinary cooperation and also readiness for active participation in faculty affairs. The deputy should also contribute to the development of the priority area ‘Materials Design’ and should set up a separate research group.


  • PhD-level university education, in Austria or abroad, in disciplines relevant for the position
  • Excellent scientific qualification in research and education in Materials Design
  • Excellent teaching capabilities (proofed/verified by a relevant venia docendi or equivalent qualification)
  • Leadership skills
  • Relevant project experience in the competitive bids and tenders environment.

The chosen applicant should have a strong command of the English language, written and spoken, to be able to effectively represent and communicate the subject matter in an international context both in the classroom and in the research field. If the candidate does not yet have sufficient knowledge of the German language, he or she must be willing to pursue and acquire language skills. The chosen applicant is expected to relocate his or her main residence to the Graz area.
