A position as tenure track researcher is available in the Section for Catchment Science and Environmental Management, Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University, within the area of catchment processes as described below.
The position is available as soon as possible.
The Section for Catchment Science and Environmental Management performs basic and applied science within catchment hydrology, nutrient dynamics and transfer, and xenobiotic substances. The annual reporting of the Danish national environmental monitoring programme (NOVANA) and provision of advisory services to environmental authorities are important parts of the section’s work.
Requirements
With the announced position, we want to strengthen research within:
- Nutrient dynamics and transfer in catchments
- Measures to mitigate adverse effects of land cultivation on water quality
- Interactions between ground water and surface waters
- Stream hydraulics and flooding
- Biophysical modelling
Thus, the candidate must have a promising international research profile within one or preferably several of the indicated research topics, a strong scientific background in biology, geology, environmental engineering or similar.
The successful candidate must have expertise within catchment analysis and management and preferably solid competences in development and use of hydrologic and nutrient and sediment transport models based on experimental data as well as spatio-temporal data obtained through monitoring programmes. The research should support the Department’s leading role in providing advice to the Danish authorities on environmental issues, and dissemination of research results to managers, politicians and other stakeholders is an important task linked to the position. Hence, the applicant is expected to acquire spoken and written Danish language skills, and relevant courses will be offered.
The Department’s research and advisory activities are project-driven with a solid tradition of cross-disciplinary research and strong team collaboration. Thus, we are looking for a candidate with proven collaborative skills and the ability to coordinate and enrich the scientific environment in the Department by during the course of the tenure period initiating and coordinating new research initiatives (e.g. EU H2020 and FP9, ERC, Danish national funding) and by strengthening the Department’s scientific network both nationally and internationally.
The candidate should have a proven innovative research approach and a documented track record of attracting research funding will be an asset.
We expect that the candidate will participate, to a minor extent, in teaching activities at both undergraduate and graduate level.
Department of Bioscience
The Department of Bioscience is engaged in research programmes, teaching curricula and consultancy covering all major biological sub-disciplines, and we conduct world-class research in the areas of aquatic biology and ecology, Arctic environment and ecosystems, biodiversity and conservation biology, genetics and evolution, microbiology and zoophysiology. The Department currently employs approximately 350 academic and technical staff and have around 75 PhD students and 500 BSc and MSc students.
The Department has a unique research environment at top international level and our competencies cover a wide spectrum, from the biology of organisms to modelling water and nutrient cycles from land to sea. Research focus areas include human impact on species, the environment and the global nutrient cycle, the effects of global climate change on biological, chemical and physical processes in and around the aquatic environment, assessment of water quality and ecological status and studies on the effects of measures that can be used to manage and reduce the loss of carbon, nutrients and pollutants to the aquatic environment. The activities take place at a national and international level with main activities in Denmark and Northern Europe, including the Arctic.
The Department plays a leading role in providing advice to the Danish authorities on environmental issues, including implementation and assessment of EU directives. We are also deeply involved in the national monitoring programme (NOVANA) and engaged in the management of the large national environmental databases.
