Tenure Track Position on Carbon Pricing

The Department of Environmental Science at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as researcher (tenure track) at the Interdisciplinary Center for Climate Change (iClimate) in collaboration with Department of Engineering Science, both Aarhus University, Denmark. The position is available from October 1st 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter, subject to negotiation.

The Department of Environmental Science
The Department of Environmental Science is a highly interdisciplinary department under the Faculty of Science and Technology at Aarhus University. The expertise ranges from physics, chemistry, microbiology and mathematical modelling to social science, geography, economics and policy analysis. Both basic and applied research is conducted on some of the major challenges facing society, such as pollution and pollution control mechanisms, management of land, soil, water, air and biodiversity, protection of ecosystem services, climate change, and energy systems. Advisory services within these areas are offered to ministries and other stakeholders. Currently, about 130 staff and PhD-students are working at the department. Within the next four to five years, the number of staff is expected to increase to 160-170. The department is co-located at Risø Campus with part of Department of Bioscience in Roskilde 35 kilometers west of Copenhagen. Further information may be found at http://www.envs.au.dk.

The tenure track researcher will be affiliated the Pillar 4 Climate and Society – Services and Solutions of iClimate and the Section for Environmental Social Science and Geography at Department of Environmental Science. The section employs 20 staff and focuses on integrated analyses of the interlinkages between the environment and society, involving the disciplines of economics, political science and sociology. The strategic foci of the section include spatial economic modelling, economics of ecosystem services and the understanding of actions and actors in policy formulation and implementation. The results are published internationally and communicated in teaching and in advisory services, mainly to public bodies. iClimate is an interdisciplinary Centre for Climate Change at Aarhus University, Faculty of Science and Technology, contributing to solving our grand societal challenges within Climate Change and Climate systems via excellent research. Description of the Position as Tenure Track on Carbon Pricing
Carbon pricing has expanded across the globe and both conceptual/theoretic and empirical research is needed to develop instruments and address economic preconditions and impacts; e.g. regarding implementation and incentives, costs, effectiveness and distribution. The selected candidate is expected to conduct research to underpin solution oriented efforts, as national decision makers need to be informed about options to implement carbon pricing policy instruments and concepts and their relative effectiveness in reducing emissions, costs, distributional effects etc.

The selected candidate is expected to develop interdisciplinary collaboration within iClimate Centre and the Department and bridge with other departments at the university, as well as relevant national and international research communities. Focus is expected to be on grand solutions including development of tools, guidance and advice to policy makers and stakeholders on rapidly transforming energy systems, urban systems and production systems towards a carbon neutral and resilient society.

Specifically, the position is expected to undertake comparative studies of evolving carbon pricing schemes in Europe and globally, to develop analysis, ex-post and ex-ante, of their contributions and significance in reducing emissions, including mapping coverage and exemption arrangements. Attention may also be awarded possible pricing of agricultural GHG emissions. With these data, the position will develop new and improved methods to assess the significance and contributions of carbon pricing schemes in reducing emissions and delivering on INDCs under the Paris Agreement, thus extending previous AU research.

The candidate is expected to work cross-disciplinarily in teams collaborating with researchers of different disciplines and to contribute to both research, teaching, and research-based policy advice of relevant regulatory authorities (national and EU) and private organizations as lead and/or in a team with other researchers. Further, the position involves responsibility for attracting highly competitive national and international funding, industry collaboration as well as student supervision in the area of carbon pricing.

Qualification Requirements
The position requires that the candidate has demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the above topics related to carbon pricing schemes, preferably in Europe and/or globally. A candidate with a strong background in economics or political science with experience in interdisciplinary approaches will be preferred. Specific expertise in one or more of the following research methods is advantageous: advanced time-series analysis, panel regressions, energy or transport modelling, micro- and/or macro econometric models and comparative design.

A significant track-record of successful external research funding, as well as a significant publication record in high-level, international, peer-reviewed journals are desirable. As part of the tenure, the candidate should be able to demonstrate research leadership and ability to attract large research projects and to successfully participate in supervision of PhD students and Master theses/Bachelor projects. Experience in conducting consultancy/advisory projects as well as in delivering high-quality undergraduate/graduate teaching is desirable.

Applicants should as a minimum hold scientific qualifications equivalent to a PhD level, have some years of highly productive post-graduate research and publication experience with high-level peer-reviewed journals, and must have a proven extensive international research collaboration (e.g. joint papers and proposals).
Furthermore, the candidate is expected to be enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary academic environment, possess good communication skills and have an ability to provide inspiration and guidance for colleagues. The position, therefore, requires a highly motivated scientist who is comfortable working in teams.

Researcher (Tenure Track)

  • PhD degree and postdoc research experience within the relevant research area
  • Proven publication record in international peer-reviewed ISI journals
  • Teaching experience
  • Experience in international research collaboration and networking
  • Emphasis will be put on the ability to communicate research results at all levels, including scientific advice to public sector authorities.

Work Location
The place of work will either be at Aarhus University in Roskilde or Aarhus, Denmark, as iClimate is located both places. The city of Roskilde is located close to Copenhagen and Aarhus is the 2nd largest city in Denmark, located on the east-coast of Jutland. Science and Technology Tenure Track

As part of the Aarhus University Tenure Track Programme, the University carries out a mid-way evaluation to review the progress of the tenure track candidate after three years, according to the same criteria used in the final tenure review. The final tenure review is conducted after five and a half years. If the review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor/Senior Researcher at Aarhus University.

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Formalities and Salary Range
Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
