The Department of Earth Science and Engineering has an international reputation for excellence in its teaching and research: The Department consistently ranks top in the Times Good University Guide in the Geoscience sector and our aim is to maintain a globally leading provision in Geoscience education. The research in the department ranges from blue sky Earth Science (e.g. Earth interior, surface, and its place within the solar system), to integration with related petroleum, environmental, mining, minerals and Engineering sectors. The purpose of the post is to support a pedagogy transformation programme within the department focused on increasing active learning in course modules that are focused, or dependent upon, research software engineering. This will be done through a combination of developing material for flipped classroom based teaching, and the integration of an automated assessment for software based coursework.

Duties and responsibilities

The Strategic Teaching Fellow will make a major contribution to the mission of the Department of Earth Science and Engineering in supporting undergraduate and postgraduate teaching for computational science and engineering related programme modules.

You will be responsible for supporting the design and delivery of the learning outcomes, teaching material, and the assessment and feedback of computational based teaching activities in the degree programmes within the Department.

Essential requirements

Applicants should have the following:

• A relevant degree (or equivalent) and have, or are nearing completion of, a PhD or equivalent in Research Software Engineering, Computational Science and Engineering or relevant discipline.
• Have extensive experience in software engineering and scientific coding in multiple programming languages.
• Have a proven track record with the teaching of research software engineering methods and coding to undergraduates and postgraduate level students.
• Have experience with collaborative software development.
