Key responsibilities of the role:

Teaching Associates (TA’s) will work under the guidance of Unit Coordinators/Lecturers to teach engaging, interactive workshops, laboratory, and classes and assist in assessment.

 

This Expression of Interest is to identify two cohorts of Teaching Associates:

1) Candidates with doctoral qualifications:

The role of the Teaching Associate or TA (with doctoral qualifications), is to support the Unit Coordinator and Lecturer in the administration and delivery of the unit, taking on a limited subset of their roles for large cohorts, under their guidance and instruction.

These activities may include:

  • Leading the second cohort of TA’s (without doctoral qualifications) team meetings under the direction of the lecturer;
  • Guiding TA’s (without doctoral qualifications) in responding to student academic queries;
  • Responding to student queries about academic or administrative matters;
  • Attending and leading certain teaching activities (excluding expert-led sessions) within the University’s policies;
  • Arranging in-semester assignments and/or laboratory activities;
  • Managing ‘Special Considerations’ inside clear boundaries set by the Unit Coordinator, escalating where necessary;
  • Independently supporting student learning through online forums, practice classes, and helpdesks;
  • Escalating any issues to the Unit Coordinator, where appropriate.

2. Candidates without doctoral qualifications:

The role of the Teaching Associate or TA (without doctoral qualifications) is to assist the Lecturer and TA’s (with doctoral qualifications) in delivering certain teaching activities.

These activities may include:

  • Mastering the unit content, and being able to answer almost all questions on it
  • Assisting in delivering practice classes, laboratory sessions, helpdesks, etc
  • Pro-actively supporting student learning through constructive feedback
  • Actively supporting the Lecturer, as directed in delivering a positive learning environment
  • Conducting certain marking tasks under general guidance
  • Escalating concerns from students to the TA’s (with doctoral qualifications) and/or Unit Coordinator
  • Possess qualifications at or above AQF Level 9 (the “AQF+1” rule)
