Senior Lecturer in Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, in the Faculty of Mathematics and Science at the University of Jyväskylä is currently seeking to recruit a candidate for the position of a

SENIOR LECTURER, MATHEMATICS or STATISTICS

The position starts on September 1, 2023 and it is for a fixed term substitution of five years.

Qualifications we are looking for

The tasks of a senior lecturer include teaching and supervision as well as conducting research in Mathematics or Statistics. We are looking for a candidate who is interested in the undergraduate teaching of Mathematics or Statistics and whose research interests match to the research profile of our department.

The senior lecturer is expected to be versatilely familiar with mathematics/statistics research and have merits in research-based teaching. A good command of English language and ability to teach in Finnish are regarded as an advantage for the applicant.

The duties, qualification requirements and language skills of Senior Lecturer are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines.

The annual salary range will be approximately 47,000 – 63,000 EUR (gross income, including holiday bonus), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. A trial period of six months will be used.

  1. A cover / motivation letter.
  2. Curriculum vitae (CV), composed according to good scientific practice and considering the template for researcher´s curriculum vitae by The Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity and including contact information of two academics who can provide reference letters.
  3. A numbered list of all scientific publications and other publications showing the applicants ability and merits.
  4. A maximum of five (5) main publications, numbered in accordance with the list of publications.
  5. Previous research and a future research plan (2-4 pages of previous scientific actions including experience in external funding acquisition as well as a research plan for developing research at the department).
  6. Teaching and societal impact statement (a short 2-4 page description of applicant’s pedagogical training and teaching merits, and societal impact including future development plans).

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Jyväskylä in central Finland is a world class research institution training mathematicians and statisticians for diverse jobs in industry, education, and academic research. The main research areas in the department are mathematical analysis and geometry, stochastics, inverse problems, and statistics with their applications. In mathematical analysis and geometry, the research is focused on geometric analysis, nonlinear partial differential equations, and geometry of metric groups. In stochastics the key research area is stochastic analysis. The research group in Inverse problems focuses its research on inverse problems in geometry and partial differential equations. These have applications e.g., in medical and industrial imaging. In statistics the areas of research are computational statistics, causal models, design, nonparametric and robust multivariate methods, biometry, and environmental statistics. The department is a member of the networks of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Inverse Problems and of the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Randomness and Structures.
