Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 11818

Overview:

As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory, ORNL has an extraordinary 80-year history of solving the nation’s biggest problems. We have a dedicated and creative staff of over 6,000 people! Our vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) is to cultivate an environment and practices that foster diversity in ideas and in the people across the organization, as well as to ensure ORNL is recognized as a workplace of choice. These elements are critical for enabling the execution of ORNL’s broader mission to accelerate scientific discoveries and their translation into energy, environment, and security solutions for the nation.

Who are we looking for?

The Research IT Infrastructure (RITI) Group in the Research Computing Services (RCS) Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks to hire a Team Lead. In this role, much of your time will be devoted to directing a team of systems engineers. The remainder of your time will be focusing on the oversight of technical projects/operations supporting a customer/project directly.

What will you be doing?

The Research IT Infrastructure Group focuses on supporting ORNL’s researcher’s IT needs. Staff charge directly to projects or programs, and not to a centralized budget. Our goal is to enable research while protecting ORNL assets, especially from cyber incidents.

As a Team Lead, you will manage staff and assign them work throughout the ORNL landscape. RITI staff who support those customers will report directly to you. Occasional meetings with the customers (those providing funding) are needed to ensure IT needs are being met within the scope of the tasks your staff are asked to preform, and to manage workload as projects ramp up and down.

The remainder of your time will be spent on one of the technical positions needed to support the directorates, such as Windows or Linux Systems Administration/Engineering, Database Administration, or other IT functions needed by customers.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Staff management activities include:

  • Hire, develop, and coach staff to ensure project and team success.
  • Performance management, including creation of yearly performance and development plans, and year-end assessments.
  • Routine meetings with staff to understand current projects and assist with removing roadblocks (may require escalation).
  • Time and attendance oversight and approval.
  • Develop and manage training plan and budget.
  • Provide reports as requested, such as major accomplishments or staffing per project.
  • Project management of informal to formal projects ensuring on-time, on-scope, and on-budget delivery.

Individual Contributor / Technical Tasks:

Team Leads in the Research Computing Support Division contribute to the Division, Group, and Team’s business continuity by engaging in cross-training with other Team Leads. Cross-training activities could include any of the following:

  • Design, install, configure, secure, and maintain Windows or Linux systems, VMware clusters, and application software in support of project needs. Provide consulting in the selection and purchase of hardware and software systems.
  • Manage backup services.
  • Ensure configuration management utilizing tools such as Ansible.
  • Ensure the secure and effective operation of computing systems through compliance with ORNL procedures and IT Internal Operating Procedures.
  • Monitor for system issues.
  • Troubleshoot system problems quickly and effectively.
  • Work with other systems engineers and vendors to resolve hardware and software issues.
  • Answer user calls related to primary project work.
  • Develop and document system and service diagrams, procedures, and software build/install notes.

All team members deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical or scientific field and 8 years professional computing experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Management experience, including training and mentoring groups and individuals in complex technical environments.
  • Experience managing technical projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • In-depth understanding of NIST 800-53 moderate confidentiality and HIPAA and other protected data requirements
  • Excellent interpersonal skills suitable for communication with customers and management.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead (projects, teams, etc.)
