Stockholm University Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry

Researcher in Sustainable Materials Chemistry

Ref. No. SU FV-3451-20

at Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry. Closing date: 21 October 2020.

The Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry is one of the largest institutions at Stockholm University with about 150 employees and about 2,000 students per academic year. The teaching focuses on material chemistry and modern characterization techniques. The main research areas are Materials for a sustainable society, Synthesis and processing methods for sustainable materials, and Chemical analysis and structural characterization methods.

Project description

The Sustainable Materials Chemistry (SUSMATCHEM) research group ( develops new processes and materials from renewable resources such as plant polyphenols. Many of our current activities focus on the synthesis of lignin-based functional materials following the principles of green chemistry. We also carry out fundamental studies on the formation and structure, as well as chemical and physical functions of renewable nanomaterials, hybrid materials, and composites in their target applications.

The Researcher will work in a project funded by The Södra Foundation. The purpose of the project is to develop lignin-based water-resistant coatings for wood protection. To achieve the goal the project will involve synthesis of lignin-based polymers and nanoparticles and setting up novel methods for the fabrication of patterned surfaces. Applicants are encouraged to refer to a few recent papers as a background to the topic: DOI: 10.1039/D0MH00798F; 10.1016/j.cej.2020.124711; and 10.21203/

Main responsibilities

The position requires synthesis and characterization of lignin-based particulate coating formulations as well as development of techniques for controlled adhesion, stability, and morphology on wood surfaces. In addition, the Researcher will be responsible for dissemination of the project results in the form of scientific publications, oral and poster contributions, and project reports as well as communication outreach to the public. The position shall entail teamwork, training, and mentoring in various projects in the group.
