Research Software Solutions Architect and Team Leader

Are you a leader and research software architect capable of driving a team to excel in developing and translating innovative solutions with clinical and industrial impact? Do you have experience developing scientific software and enabling high impact collaborative research in multidisciplinary science? Do you have experience in medical image computing, computational physiology modelling, medical informatics and data analytics? Are you both conceptual and pragmatic to innovate and find solutions to challenging artificial intelligence and computational medicine problems underpinning pressing needs in medicine and industry?

The (CISTIB), within the Faculties of Engineering & Physical Sciences and Medicine & Health, involves various academics and research groups. It focuses on algorithmic and applied research in computational imaging, computational physiology modelling, and simulation. CISTIB is also part of the Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine (LICAMM). In addition, we work in close cooperation with clinicians from various research centres within the University and the academic hospitals of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT), the largest NHS Trust of the UK. The Centre also has close connections with the Leeds Institute for Data Analytics, the Centre for HealthTech Innovation, the Leeds Institute for Fluid Dynamics, and the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering.

Clinical areas where CISTIB focuses are neurology, cardiology, rheumatology and oncology. In addition, we create diagnostic/prognostic quantitative imaging biomarkers, computational medicine methods, interventional planning, guidance, and in silico trials solutions. The Centre hosts academics, researchers, graduate students, ad research software engineers, and project managers, forming a cross-disciplinary team committed to working collectively towards the clinical translation of their innovations.

In this role, you will lead the Research Software Engineering (RSE) team within CISTIB and take overall responsibility for developing and maintaining the and its domain-specific prototypes. MULTI-X is conceived as a critical vehicle for translation to the clinic of CISTIB’s R&D outputs and is correspondingly essential to realising the impact potential of our work.

We seek a leader with technical proficiency and the passion and ability to inspire the RSE team to achieve this vision and its full potential. You will have strong management skills and a proven record in developing robust research software engineering teams. You will work closely with and form an essential interface between engineering-based teams within the University, clinical and medical physics researchers within LTHT, industrial and third party collaborators, to ensure software developments remain focused and relevant, and that development resources are effectively used. As the leader of the RSE team, you will also work closely with academics in planning new research activities and be responsible for ensuring the team’s sustainability and ability to deliver on agreed project objectives. In this context, you will actively contribute to, and where appropriate, lead, fundraising initiatives through which the team is resourced.
