Fixed-term position available for two years

Be part of the Australian Institute of Machine Learning – the largest computer vision and machine learning research group in Australia

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher for the SmartSat CRC-funded project Ultra-fine Attitude Control via Event-based Star Tracking and Piezoelectric Stabilisation. The researcher will conduct applied research on real-time SLAM algorithms for space applications. The researcher will come under the supervision of Professor Tat-Jun Chin, and will be working closely with space researchers at The University of Adelaide and a prominent space enterprise.

The Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) is one of the world’s largest institutes dedicated to basic and applied research in artificial intelligence, machine learning and computer vision. It is also one of the most successful, in terms of winning some of the biggest research awards and major benchmark competitions in the field, as well as securing major industry and government contracts.  According to CSRankings.org, the School of Computer Science at Adelaide is ranked third in the world (from 2010 and 2020) in the area of computer vision. Much of this excellent result is due to the efforts of the researchers at AIML.

The successful candidate will have a strong work ethic and the ability to work well independently and as a member of a broader team in addition to demonstrating a commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion. Ideally the candidate will have the experience and/or ability to contribute to the promotion of research capabilities to industry and the wider community.

To be successful you will need:

  • Have or be about to complete a PhD (or equivalent qualification) in Computer Vision, Robotics, Machine Learning or other closely related areas, and a good first degree in Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline.
  • A record of quality research as evidenced by publications in leading journals and at conferences.
  • Expertise and experience in computer programming, especially in C/C++.
  • Significant experience in developing real-time SLAM algorithms for robotic applications.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English, with an ability to communicate scientific ideas to an expert audience, both orally and written.
