A Death-Dealing Bacterial Nanomachine (P2002)

The Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI) at the University of Basel invites highly motivated scientists to apply for the SNI PhD program in Nanoscience.

Your position

This SNI PhD fellowship will study the Type 6 secretion system (T6SS) that Gram-negative bacterial cells employ to kill other bacterial and eukaryotic cells [1] (Fig. 1). The T6SS resembles a nanoscale harpoon that is rapidly ejected from bacterial cells to deliver toxins into neighbouring cells [2,3]. In this project, we will use high-speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM) [4], as well as AFM force spectroscopy and confocal microscopy (CM) to study the nanomechanical forces produced by the T6SS to puncture neighboring cells. In doing so, our project promises to shed light on how bacterial cells kill their prey. You will work with a collaborative interdisciplinary team and enthusiastic mentors.

Your profile

Highly motivated individuals with a background in biology, nanoscience, or related fields are encouraged to apply. A master degree is required in any of the natural sciences. You will be registered as a PhD student in the graduate program of the Swiss Nanoscience Institute at the University of Basel.
