Job summary

The Department of Mechanical Engineering has been awarded a research fellowship in partnership with EDF Energy to support the High Temperature Centre (HTC) that was formally established at Imperial in 2008. We are looking to appoint an outstanding researcher with ambitions to advance their Research career at Imperial College London. This is a 4-year fellowship position and, for the right candidate, the Department may consider turning it into a permanent Academic position at the end of the term.

­The fellow will be working primarily on the structural integrity of alloys related to EDF Energy’s engineering components. The fellow’s research is expected to focus on the development of numerical models and/or experimental testing techniques related to the Centre’s objectives, which include creep, fatigue and general fracture mechanics at various length scales, temperatures and environments, with the overall aim of advancing modelling and testing techniques leading to the enhanced safety of structural components.

The fellow is expected to perform, plan and lead a high-quality programme of innovative research in structural integrity of alloys, undertake project management and/or supervise multi-disciplinary teams. In addition, the Fellow will be expected to submit publications to refereed journals and to attract external research funding. This could be in the wider area of structural integrity and materials technology. There will also be an aspect of student supervision as part of this position.

Duties and responsibilities

You will primarily be leading high quality research in Structural Integrity of Engineering Alloys. As such, you will be involved in:

  • publishing research papers and building an international reputation for yourself, and enhancing the reputation of the Department
  • obtaining research grants from national and international funding bodies, and obtain funding from industry where appropriate
  • supervising postgraduate students and undergraduate research projects

Essential requirements

    • You must have experience of numerical modelling and/or the development of experimental techniques.
    • Your must be able to demonstrate knowledge on fracture mechanics at a range of temperatures.
    • ­You must hold a PhD in a relevant subject and have experience of working in a Research environment.
    • You should have a record of high-quality publications in peer reviewed journals and have experience of presenting your work at significant conferences.
    • You must be able to supervise postgraduate students and undergraduate research projects.
