Applications are invited for a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Research Fellowship as part of the “DiManD: Digital Manufacturing and Design” European Training Network (

The successful applicant to this post will undertake research in digital manufacturing and Industry 4.0 at the boundaries between manufacturing engineering and computer science. Specifically, this post will focus on the implementation of Machine Learning (ML) methods for intelligent manufacturing control systems, specifically in the development of control systems that can capture changes in the environment and can react and adapt to those changes.

In addition to world-leading research in the individual project, the role holder will collaborate with other DiManD researchers on a collaborative project and demonstrate their research on a physical industrial demonstrator hosted at the University of Nottingham.

The successful applicant must register for a PhD at the University of Nottingham, complete up to 9 months of secondments with academic and industrial partners both within the UK and Europe, and participate in a network-wide training programme to ensure the role holder leaves the programme as an international leader in Industry 4.0.

This full-time post will preferably start no later than 1 May 2020 and is offered on fixed-term 36 month contract. This post will not be affected by the United Kingdom’s expected departure from the European Union.

DiManD is funded through the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Innovative Training Networks programme (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2018) and will provide training to high-achieving early stage researchers (ESRs) in the area of Industry 4.0. A total of 14 ESRs will be hosted across the network, which comprises 8 host organisations (4 academic institutes, 2 research centres and 2 companies) together with 19 partner organisations who have agreed to contribute a range of activities to the network including providing training and expertise, and hosting secondments.

Candidates will be required to meet the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher eligibility criteria: In particular, at the time of appointment candidates must be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and must not already hold a PhD. Additionally, they must not have resided in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the appointment. Candidates can be of any nationality provided they meet eligibility requirements.
