The Opportunity

We seek a Research Fellow for a two and a half year (30 month) appointment with expertise in natural language processing.  The research that you will undertake specifically addresses information extraction from the chemical patent literature.  Topics of interest include relation and event extraction, co-reference resolution, and analysis of the semantics of tables.  The precise priorities for the research will be determined based on project requirements, but will involve natural language processing of chemical patents, with a particular desire to develop novel approaches to biochemical information extraction that take advantage of deep learning methods.  The project is in collaboration with Elsevier BV, a leading scientific publisher and developer of the Reaxsys database. In addition to access to substantial domain knowledge that is enabled through this collaboration, we will be working closely with the Content and Innovation team at Elsevier to develop solutions that have substantial practical applications.

You’ll join an ongoing project team, with one current post-doctoral Research Fellow and one PhD student already in place and a second PhD student is expected to join soon.  You will be based in the natural language processing group in the School of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Melbourne and work under the direction of Professor Karin Verspoor and other team members Professor Timothy Baldwin, Associate Professor Trevor Cohn and Professor Lawrence Cavedon from RMIT University.

About you

With a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related discipline, you have a strong record of achievement in research and associated publications in high-quality journals, conferences, technical reports or other scholarly publications.  In your career to date you have demonstrated the ability to perform independent research and communicate complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences alike.
