The Informal Cities Lab

The Informal Cities Lab (ICL) is located within the Department of Architecture and undertakes design-based, action research into and within the conditions of informality in developing cities. With a focus on the Asia-Pacific region, the Lab works collaboratively with interdisciplinary and multi-sectoral teams and communities at the intersection of academic research and international development. The ICL explores critical questions surrounding the environmental, socio-political, and economic contexts and their relationship to transforming built environments in urban informal settlements of the Global South.

The Opportunity

In this three year fixed-term position, you will develop and conduct research in international and sustainable development themes.  Contributing to ongoing and emerging research projects in the Lab, you will also collaborate with the interdisciplinary project research teams, governments, businesses and communities in Australia and internationally. As the Research Fellow, you will assist in project planning and monitoring, stakeholder liaison and management, and communication activities, provide expert advice and manage major change initiatives to support the delivery of project outcomes.

The Research Fellow will contribute to the development of strategies to design and implement the social and physical interventions through collaborations with local government agencies, universities and NGOs.  In addition, the Research Fellow will research policy and planning mechanisms for scaling up interventions for sustainable development in the Citarum River Basin.

Working on the Citarum Action Research Project, your aim will be to improve the well-being, resilience and prosperity of communities affected by flooding and contaminated water sources in the Citarum Basin. You will focus on co-designing social and biophysical interventions and innovations to achieve improvements in integrated water and waste management for a number of communities in the Citarum Basin.

This role is a full-time position; however, flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.

At Monash University, we are committed to being a Child Safe organisation. This position at the University will require the incumbent to hold a valid Working with Children Check.
