Automatic Control is an exciting and broad subject, covering both deep mathematics and hands-on engineering. Historically it has been instrumental in many areas, in putting a man on the moon and the development of the Internet e.g. Today, driven by the need to engineer ever larger systems, Automatic Control has never been more relevant. It is crucial for secure operation of many cutting edge technologies, ranging from integration of renewable energy sources, cloud computing, robotics, Internet of Things and autonomous systems. The Department of Automatic Control is a world class department with projects in all of the above areas. The department has a stimulating and international environment consisting of PhD students, postdocs and teachers coming from all corners of the world. Research and teaching are conducted in an open and progressive atmosphere with challenges and cooperation both within academia and with industry, with national and international networks.

Lund University and the Department of Automatic Control welcome applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. We regard equality and diversity as a strength and an asset.

Work duties
As a research engineer at the department of Automatic Control, you work in a group of technical and administrative personnel, in close collaboration with researchers, teachers, doctoral students, and undergraduate students. The emphasis of the work is within embedded system integration and server management, but it also involves IT operations and general service. The tasks include system integration of embedded systems for RobotLab, the Department’s teaching lab, as well as for research projects that are dependent on proprietary or custom software and/or hardware. You will also work with operations, local adaptations, and to a certain extent the development of new software for the department’s Linux environment. In addition to this, you need to possess the knowledge needed to troubleshoot and integrate embedded hardware.

You will be an expert in a larger context. It is therefore important that you can identify needs independently and propose, as well as implement, technical solutions. You have a habit of documenting your solutions in a way that enables debugging, maintenance and further development by colleagues with a similar background to yours. You are expected to have good ability to communicate about your work with other research engineers as well as with researchers, teachers, doctoral students, and undergraduate students.

Qualification requirements

  • Experience of maintaining networks/servers and developing software in a Linux environment.
  • Good knowledge of embedded systems and their utilization within a pre-existing software ecosystem.
  • Very good ability to collaborate, with both technical experts and researchers/teachers and doctoral students.
  • Ability to take independent initiatives, make technical decisions, implement and document solutions and identify problems/needs.
  • Very good knowledge of English, speaking and in writing

Other qualifications

  • Education: A masters in engineering, or corresponding background.
  • Experience of leading or executing project-oriented work.
  • Interest in, and some experience, of mechatronics.
  • In addition to experience with Linux, you are either required to have experience, or the ability to quickly familiarize yourself, with source code in a number of languages/tools/systems such as C, Python, ROS, Julia, Java, Matlab, KiCAD/Eagle, LaTeX, etc.
  • Experience in setting up environments for distributed large-scale computation (Cloud and GPU) is a merit.
  • Experience of open source software development is a merit

Assessment criteria
We will place a great emphasis on personal aptitude. Consideration will be given to good collaboration, drive and independence. Experiences and competences, which complement and strengthen current and future technical work at the department will also be considered. We also attach great importance to the ability to plan and communicate around projects and daily tasks. We are looking for a person who is curious and 0proactive, interested in development, good at communication and information.

Terms of employment
Full-time, 100 %.
