Research Associate to 3D Printing of Energy Storage Devices

Job Summary

Applications are invited for a Research Associate position funded by the ERC-Consolidator grant “3DAddChip” that will design miniaturized devices using a three-dimensional printing technique. Deterministic assembly of 2D materials in three-dimensional miniaturized structures is paramount for the fabrication of new small-scale devices to serve in on-chip technologies. This is a new manufacturing challenge, as miniaturization is currently developed to achieve planar-geometries. Three-dimensional printing allows templating materials with arbitrary complexity at different scales. The Mattevi group has developed a general strategy to formulate highly concentrated, water-based 2D material inks suitable for printing functional 3D architectures in miniaturized scales. This Research Associate position will fabricate devices at small scales for energy storage, using advanced three-dimensional printing techniques. S/he will test the devices and will work on materials-devices design.

Duties and Responsibilities

You will be a conscientious, innovative and experimental scientist who has successfully completed a PhD (or equivalent) in Materials/Chemistry or other science/engineering subjects.

You will work within a team of research associates in extensively newly-refurbished laboratories on the South Kensington Campus and interact with several academic collaborators. In addition to the state-of-the-art facilities within the department, you will also have access to the facilities at the London Centre for Nanotechnology.  You will be expected to perform the following duties:

    • To take initiatives in the planning of research
    • To direct the work of small research teams
    • To identify and develop suitable techniques, and apparatus, for the collection and analysis of data
    • To conduct data analysis
    • To ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times
    • To maintain accurate and complete records of all findings
    • To write reports for submission to research sponsors
    • To present findings to colleagues and at conferences
    • To submit publications to refereed journals
    • To provide guidance to staff and students
    • To attend relevant workshops and conferences as necessary
    • To develop contacts and research collaborations within the College and the wider community
  • To promote the reputation of the Group, the Department and the College
  • To provide guidance to PhD Students
  • Contribute to bids for research grants
  • To conduct and plan own scientific work with appropriate supervision.
  • To maintain highly organised and accurate record of experimental Work.
  • To actively participate in the research programme of the Group
  • To publish in high quality journals and to present data at national and international meetings.
  • To participate in Group research meetings and internal seminars.
  • To collaborate with other allied scientists within Imperial College and elsewhere in London and abroad, as appropriate.
  • To contribute to the smooth running of the Group’s laboratories and, facilities with other scientists, clinicians, technicians and students within the laboratories.
  • Assist in the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research students and research assistants as required.
  • To comply with the College, Division, and Unit safety practices and to attend courses on safety when appropriate.
  • Any other duties as may be deemed reasonable by Head of group as well as Head of Division/Department/Section.

Essential Requirements

Candidates/post holders will be expected to demonstrate the following:

  • Successful completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in Materials/Chemistry or other science/engineering subjects
  • The successful candidate will have understanding and knowledge of electrochemistry and extensive experimental experience with fabrication of supercapacitor and/or battery devices.
  • The successful candidate will have knowledge, understanding and extensive experimental ability in testing supercapacitor and/or battery devices and in critically analysing the results.
  • Experience in handing nanomaterials in liquid suspensions and powder form in a clean and methodical manner is essential.
  • Knowledge of properties of nanomaterials, polymers and thin films and experimental experience in handling them.
  • Knowledge and some experimental experience in the following characterization techniques: XRD, SEM.
  • The successful candidate will have knowledge and understanding of properties of atomically thin two-dimensional materials and some experimental experience in handling them.
  • Knowledge and proven ability to implement safe working practices in laboratories

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £34,397- £37,486 per annum.
