Our Profile

The Chair of Technical Thermodynamics (LTT) of the RWTH Aachen under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. André Bardow deals with the analysis of thermodynamic systems on all scales: from the molecule to the technical process up to complete value chains. 
Within the LTT, the working group Energy Systems Technology deals with the development of methods for the energetic and ecological optimization and evaluation of industrial production systems within the energy, steel, cement and chemical industries.

Your Profile

You have a university degree (Master or equivalent) in engineering, environmental sciences or chemical engineering, or a comparable qualification, which has been completed with above-average success. In addition to a high degree of independence and initiative, you have good communication and team skills. 
In addition, you can speak German and English fluently in spoken and written. They have very good basic thermodynamic knowledge. Ideally, you will have experience in the simulation and optimization of energy and process engineering systems as well as in their ecological assessment by means of life cycle assessment ("Life Cycle Assessment").

Your Tasks

The combined use of renewable resources such as biomass, CO2 and plastic waste and renewable electricity are promising ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel use in the energy and chemical industries. 
The aim of your work is the technical and ecological assessment of such measures to reduce environmental impacts within the energy and chemical industries. The focus of the work is on complete value chains for the material use of CO2 to produce chemicals, plastics and fuels: from the provision of the resource to the disposal and recycling of the products.
Their specific task initially consists in the identification and characterization of promising technologies that produce products based on CO2. Afterwards, you will develop mass and energy balances for the identified technologies on the basis of thermodynamic models and with the help of suitable simulation programs. On the basis of the developed models, the technologies are then evaluated by means of a life cycle assessment and finally optimized.
From the optimization of individual technologies, you extend the procedure to the ecological evaluation of complete value added chains. On the basis of the developed models, you will carry out an ecological optimization of the value chain and the associated energy supply in order to identify those value chains that bring about the greatest reduction in environmental impact. In this way, your work contributes to identifying ways for a more sustainable industry that effectively tackles climate change. 
In addition to the technical aspects, a high degree of individual responsibility is required in the solution of project tasks to your activities. 
In addition, your cooperation includes the active design of our teaching assignment and the personal support of students.

Our Range

Recruitment is in the employment relationship. 
The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and limited to 1 year. A further employment of at least 2 years is planned. 
This is a full time position. On request, a part-time employment can be made possible. 
There is a doctoral option. 
The position is rated with EG 13 TV-L.
