Role Description

Department

The Medical Robotics Lab within the Department of Electronic Engineering is looking to appoint a Research Associate with experience in Medical Robotics and Medical Mechatronics. We would particularly welcome applications from candidates with expertise and a clear research vision in medical robotics for computer-aided surgery, image-guided therapy or intelligent technologies for minimally invasive diagnosis and surgery including medical imaging, medical instrumentation and computer-aided diagnosis. Other areas of interest include but are not limited to multimodality imaging, surgical planning, control, robot manipulation, autonomous robots, soft and bioinspired robots, haptics, human-machine interaction, human augmentation (AR and VR) and collaboration, mobile health and sensor and actuator designs. You will conduct creative research projects that have potential to generate external research funding. You will be expected to carry out individual and collaborative research, actively participate in research supervision, management and administration contributing to successful research outputs. The successful candidate will be capable of delivering excellent interdisciplinary and impactful research that advances your subject area nationally and internationally. The post will be based at the University of York, although you will at times be expected to travel across research sites to undertake fieldwork and attend project meetings as needed.

Role

The successful applicant will work with the Medical Robotics research team to:

  • Carry out individual and collaborative research
  • Identify, adapt, develop and apply research methodologies and techniques appropriate to the type of research and development undertaken
  • Lead on and/or contribute to the production of research outputs and research outcomes
  • Disseminate research by publishing high impact research in quality journals, either as a sole author or in collaboration with others, and to devise, direct and develop research projects generating external research funding
  • Take responsibility for overseeing, developing and promoting innovative research approaches, which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst undergrad and graduate students
  • Undertake effectively, a range of administrative and managerial responsibilities 

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed 

  • PhD in Medical Robotics, Medical Mechatronics, Medical Imaging or working towards or substantial equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of methods used in Medical Robotics research, their strengths, limitations, and applications and a range of research techniques and methodologies.
  • Experience of carrying out both independent and collaborative research and ability to develop research objectives, projects and proposals.
  • Experience of writing up research work for publication, competency to make presentations

This is a fixed term contract for 23 months.
