The Opportunity

The School of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) has an opportunity for a Research Associate / Senior Research Associate. Advanced computational methods for automated medical image analysis, bioimage informatics, health informatics, and downstream data analytics are increasingly needed to improve the reliability and throughput of medical diagnostics and screening. Artificial intelligence (AI) approaches, in particular computer vision, machine and deep learning, are key components of the methods we are developing for these purposes.

Biomedical imaging and health informatics within Artificial Intelligence is a growing focus area in CSE. In this role you will support the ongoing research in this area and develop solutions for new challenging problems in biomedical imaging and health informatics.

This position will give you the opportunity to develop your scholarly research and professional activities through your contributions to the writing of scientific papers and reports for international journals. You will also participate in conferences and workshops, assist with the supervision of students and have active engagement with industry partners.

This role reports to Professor Arcot Sowmya and has no direct reports.

  • Salary
    • Level A – AUD $100,318 to $107,299 per annum + 17% superannuation
    • Level B - AUD $112,679 to $132,832 per annum + 17% superannuation
  • Full time
  • Fixed-term contract – 3 years

Skills and Experience

Level A - Research Associate

  • PhD (or soon to be awarded) in AI-driven biomedical imaging and health informatics or closely related area, with experience in Computer Vision and Machine Learning / Deep Learning for Medical Data, including medical images and /or non-imaging based clinical/omics/text data, and temporal/multimodal machine learning
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and communicate implications of research findings to supervisor and research team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
  • Ability to supervise undergraduate students or equivalent experience in the supervision of junior staff in related projects
  • Expertise in (and ability to learn from others if necessary):
    • one or more of R, Stata, scikit-learn;
    • one or more deep learning tools such as TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch;
    • one or more image manipulation tools in Matlab, Python, OpenCV;
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Create a scholarly impact in the discipline which is recognised by peers in advancement of disciplinary knowledge.
  • Achieve a citation rate or proportion of research outputs in most prestigious outlets (e.g. A/A* or equivalent) in line with discipline and leading universities.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

Level B – Senior Research Associate (in addition to the above)

  • At least two years of experience in a postdoctoral position conducting research in the field of biomedical imaging and health informatics.
  • Proven research and publication track record, particularly in high quality peer-reviewed journals relative to opportunity
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to deliver high quality and innovative teaching and student experience to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise honours and postgraduate research students.
