Posting Summary
The Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation is developing novel early flood early warning systems capable of automated modeling and simulation of flood events for urban environments. We are currently accepting applications for a Research Associate position in relation to these development efforts.
The successful candidate will report to Dr. Jie Gong, the faculty director of the infrastructure resilience program at the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation, and will work independently with clearly defined research objectives associated with projects funded by NJ Office of Emergency Management, FEMA, and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The Research Associate will take a leadership role and provide the support and management skills necessary to accomplish the goals of the programs.
The Research Associate will act as the primary investigator in the area of modeling and simulation of flood events in urban environments and will collaborate with other investigators in related areas. The position assumes expertise in at least two of the following areas (a) the use of computational and numerical hydrodynamic modeling tools, such as HEC-RAS, Open Foam, and ADCIRC, to construct early flood warning systems (b) automated simulation modeling of flood events with scripting tools, and © stormwater management tools, such as SWMM. The position also assumes collaboration with a group of researchers and graduate students from both academic and industrial partners. The Research Associate will be responsible for project reporting related to his/her research activities, supervision of graduate students, preparation of research proposals and publications, and presentations at professional and research conferences and meetings.
The Research Associate may be required to travel independently to various locations in the U.S. and work offsite without any manager supervision. In addition, the employee will demonstrate a leadership role in forming and maintaining productive working relationships, and the ability to work autonomously in the prescribed duties, as well cooperatively with ICMP’s, and CAIT’s faculty and staff in general.

COVID-19 Immunization Requirement

Under Policy 60.1.35, Rutgers University requires all prospective employees to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated and have received a booster (where eligible) against COVID-19 prior to commencement of employment, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Prospective employees who are not eligible for a booster at the time of an offer of employment must provide proof they have received a booster within two weeks (14 calendar days) of eligibility. Based on current guidance, individuals are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 two weeks after receiving the final dose of any COVID-19 vaccine authorized or approved for use in the United States by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Eligibility for a booster against COVID-19 varies and is explained on the University’s web site located at https://coronavirus.rutgers.edu/covid-19-vaccine. Failure to provide proof of primary vaccination and booster will result in rescission of a prospective employee’s offer of employment and/or disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Education and Experience
This position requires a Ph.D. in civil or environmental engineering or other related field and at least two years of experience with automated modeling and simulation of flood events and early flood warning systems. Extensive flood modeling and systems integration skills are desirable for the position. This position also requires the ability to research, compile data, and formulate reports and deliverables on a consistent and timely basis. In addition, the successful candidate must be able to think broadly and conceptually and formulate creative, sophisticated solutions to complex problems, prioritize workload, and work independently with general supervision.
This position also requires good communication and presentation skills, and a strong proficiency in technical writing and editing. The individual will be expected to hold very high standards in how information is developed and presented. This position will require the ability to manage, document, and organize multiple simultaneous projects, and will occasionally involve travel within the United States to attend meetings/conferences/etc.

Under Policy 100.3.1 Immunization Policy for Covered Individuals, if employment will commence during Flu Season, Rutgers University may require certain prospective employees to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Additional infection control and safety policies may apply. Prospective employees should speak with their hiring manager to determine which policies apply to the role or position for which they are applying. Failure to provide proof of vaccination for any required vaccines or obtain a medical or religious exemption from the University will result in rescission of a candidate’s offer of employment or disciplinary action up to and including termination.
