Job description

Job summary

Imperial College London invites outstanding, dynamic individuals to apply for a Research Associate position focused on Autonomous Vehicle Modelling. You will be based in the Transport Systems & Logistics Laboratory (TSL), part of the Centre for Transport Engineering & Modelling within the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering.

The TSL is led by Dr Panagiotis Angeloudis and is composed of a team of 15 researchers renowned for their expertise in transport systems, autonomy, simulation, mathematical optimisation, and machine learning.

You will work on a collaborative project that seeks to accelerate the training of autonomous vehicle control algorithms. The main focus strives to further develop the theoretical underpinnings of autonomous vehicle training frameworks, with a special emphasis on multi-vehicle interactions and collaborative control algorithms.

We seek candidates with a robust background in autonomous vehicle operations modelling gained through either academic research or relevant industry experience. You should thrive in multidisciplinary settings and possess a proven track record of successful collaboration with industrial partners on joint projects.

Duties and responsibilities

This position represents an enriching opportunity to expand both theoretical understanding and practical application in the field of autonomous vehicle operations. You will particularly focus on the facets of multi-vehicle control and autonomous vehicle safety.

You will be principally responsible for enhancing autonomous vehicle control algorithms and advancing the theoretical basis of our training frameworks. The purpose of this work will be on multi-vehicle interactions and the development of collaborative control systems. The role involves contributing to the design of a centralised controller that effectively manages multiple interacting autonomous vehicles, striking a balance between traffic throughput and safety. Additionally, you will engage proactively in project meetings, produce high-calibre research deliverables, and communicate findings to varied audiences.

Essential requirements

    • Hold a PhD in Engineering or Computer Science or a closely related field, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience,

    • Experience in vehicle trajectory optimisation, traffic flow modelling and/or agent-based simulation,

    • Practical experience in a broad range of techniques including reinforcement learning, model-predictive control, and mathematical optimisation,

    • Knowledge of Autonomous Vehicle modelling tools (e.g. Carla/Autoware),

    • Knowledge of Programming Languages (C++/C#, Python or equivalent),

    • Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals.
