Job summary

Applicants are invited for the position of research associate in the Dyson School of Design Engineering to work on the Imperial College London Excellence Fund for Frontiers Research project. The project is titled A novel biohybrid module for vertical and micro-gravity farming. The project will develop a new form of hydroponic system that uses additive manufactured bio-receptive structures to replace the large, cumbersome, water based systems.

Duties and responsibilities

The role holder will be tasked with developing parametric CAD models of bio-receptive modules and development of 3D printing technology capable of hydrogel printing. The role is part of a wider team effort across 4 departments including phd students and technicians. The project is a multi-disciplinary effort and the role holder will have direct input on project outcomes.

It is expected that the role holder will work towards generating research outputs suitable for academic publications, attendance to project meetings and communications with various stakeholders.

Essential requirements

· PhD or Masters Degree in Physical Science or Engineering or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience
· Practical experience within a research environment
· Practical experience in developing parametric CAD models either via CAD packages or custom code
· Practical experience in developing, and using, 3D printing technology

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £35,477- £38,566 per annum
