Applications are invited for the above post within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Nottingham. The Faculty has an excellent international reputation for high quality theoretical and experimental research funded by EU, EPSRC, DTI and manufacturing industry, including leading the EPSRC-funded Future Composites Manufacturing Hub. The person appointed will develop novel approaches and methods which estimate modelling-related errors/uncertainties induced in large, coarse FE models (particularly the structural analysis of aircraft). The successful applicant will be working at the forefront of aircraft modelling and virtual prototyping technologies. As a result, this position offers the opportunity for close collaboration with industrial partners (Airbus). Candidates must have extensive experience the application of the finite element method and Bayesian recovery (Gaussian Processes) techniques. Furthermore, candidates should be able to demonstrate an understanding of error estimation methods and approaches used for quantifying uncertainties in engineering structures (in the context of finite element modelling). Familiarity with the finite element package ABAQUS is also essential.

Candidates must also be experienced in programming of numerical and mathematical tasks in high-level languages, so a good understanding of a suitable high-level programming language e.g. Python or MATLAB is essential. Candidates are expected to hold a good degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline and to be qualified to PhD level (or near completion of PhD), ideally in a field relating to numerical simulation of stress fields in engineering structures. Candidates will need to be able to undertake research and perform communication activities (including the writing of reports and publications and the presentation of results at conferences and meetings) with a minimum amount of supervision.

This post is available immediately, it is offered on a full-time (36.25hrs per week), fixed term contract until 31/05/21. Job share opportunities may also be considered.

This post is underpinned by the Multiscale Analysis of AiRframe Structures and Quantification of UncErtaintieS System (MARQUESS) Project ID 754581 funded under H2020-EU.3.4.5.1. - IADP Large Passenger Aircraft, part of Clean Sky 2.
