Applications are invited for a researcher to work on an EPSRC Supergen Bioenergy Hub funded project on Optimisation of Integrated Bioenergy and High Value Product Processing Pathways for UK Biomass Resources. The project is a joint collaboration between the University of Nottingham, University of Lincoln, and University College London (UCL). This role will work on an exciting new project which will be establishing the potential for different UK biomass resources to produce bioenergy and high value products from integrated processing systems. The objective of this project is to examine the relative performance of different integrated processing pathways and establish the optimal processing routes for different UK biomass feedstocks. The project will assess the environmental and techno-economic case for an integrated bioenergy and high value product process chain for different UK biomass feedstocks. 

The role will involve experimental and modelling work which will explore several holistic biomass processing routes. The project will include biomass characterisation using established analytical characterisation techniques, followed by experimental work on drop tube furnaces, hydrothermal processing rigs and gasification rigs. The experimental work will be conducted by the researcher at the University of Nottingham and University of Lincoln, with the researcher being based at the University of Nottingham. The project will also include Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and process simulation. The researcher will be working with an academic at each of the research institutions to deliver the project.

Candidates must hold a Degree or equivalent in a relevant area and a PhD or equivalent (or close to completion) in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related area. Candidates should have experience of solid fuel processing (preferably biomass or coal), as well as being open to learning new experimental and modelling techniques. Experience of process simulation is desirable. Key to the success of the application will be the ability of the applicant to demonstrate that they can lead and undertake co-ordinated biomass processing experiments and analysis. The ability to work individually and in a team, as well as interacting professionally with collaborators is essential as this project will operate in close collaboration with colleagues from other universities.

This full-time post is available immediately and will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 31 March 2021. Job share arrangements may be considered.
