Job description

Job summary

The Electrochemical Science & Engineering Group is looking to hire a battery modeller to join our diverse and expanding team at the centre of cutting-edge research in electrochemical storage. Funded directly by industry or by a range of research bodies such as EPSRC, Innovate UK and the Faraday Institution, we work with our collaborators to develop the next generation of batteries and Battery Management Systems, with the goal of improving their performance and lifetime.

Models are required to estimate the state of high energy batteries and control them on- and offline. This allows us to design high performance and long-lasting battery packs.

Our research group is interdisciplinary and currently spreads across four different departments within Imperial College London. We work at the interface between science and engineering of electrochemical devices. With over 50 postdoctoral & postgraduate researchers, we are a vibrant team with industrial and academic contacts.

Due to the nature of this role we will be shortlisting candidate as applications are received. We therefore reserve the right to close this vacancy as soon as a suitable candidate has been appointed. It is therefore advisable that you submit your application as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Duties and responsibilities

    • You will primarily be developing reduced order models for lithium-ion batteries.
    • You will be working with the wider experimental team to gather data for model parametrisations and validation and support the implementation of control algorithms onto the battery management system.
    • You will assist in the planning of the research and assist with the publication of findings.

Essential requirements

    • You should have a degree in a relevant subject area. Completing a PhD (or equivalent) in a pertinent area would be helpful but it is not a requirement for appointment as a Research Assistant.
    • You must have experience of working in a research environment.
    • Experience of reduced order modelling and control is essential, as it is knowledge of control theory.
    • Knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures is essential

Further information

This is a fixed term position for up to 24 months in the first instance.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £38,194 - £41,388 per annum.
