Research Assistant/Associate in Optical Signal Processing

University of Cambridge Department of Engineering

United Kingdom

A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on Optical Signal Processing.

The post holder will be located on the Department's West Cambridge Site, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The role of the post holder is to carry out research on the industrially funded Optical Precoding project, which is looking to investigate advanced optical signal processing (OSP) technologies using state-of-the-art photonic integration platforms. With a goal of replacing the power hungry electronic digital signal processing that is using ever more complex algorithms to enable ever-increasing data capacity demands, the successful candidate will look to evaluate the algorithmic functions of the baseband processing chain against possible optical processing techniques and propose an optical architecture to improve the system. The goal is to research appropriate alternative OSP technologies based on photonic integration platforms to replace digital signal processing (DSP) where it makes sense to replace electronics with photonics, in order to improve system-wide power efficiency and latency for baseband unit (BBU).

The qualifications required to perform the role are to have obtained a PhD in Electronic Engineering, Physics, Applied Maths, Computer Science, or a related discipline. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated aptitude in relevant areas of research and an ability to work within a team.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £26,715 - £30,942; Research Associate: £32,816 - £40,322

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 October 2022 in the first instance, with the possibility of a extension to 24 months.
