Work Location: Downtown campus


Hours/Week and Schedule: 35hr/week


Hourly Wage: Depending on experience, and in line with the Collective Agreement


Duration: 3 months (replacement of leave possible renewable)

Job Summary

The Department seeks a Research Assistant to facilitate the development, implementation, and establishment of its undergraduate laboratory and design courses. The Research Assistant will be responsible for: advising/assisting in developing, testing, evaluating, and designing new laboratory modules or exercises; defining training for Teaching Assistants; preparing experimental materials and equipment; helping define, purchase, install, and manage instruments and materials in line with research; maintaining equipment; enforcing laboratory safety rules and regulations; and providing support to faculty, staff, and students.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Designing and implementing new laboratory modules
  • Ensuring proper installation, maintenance, and housekeeping of laboratory facilities
  • Monitoring and overseeing laboratory budgets, preparing reports, working with vendors, and maintaining accurate records
  • Overseeing teaching assistants during their pre-lab activities including preparing reagents, materials, and equipment for upcoming lab sessions and assisting in setting up demonstrations
  • Ensuring all safety regulations are appropriately implemented and arranging required laboratory safety training for students and staff where needed
  • Supporting research and assisting with the installation of research equipment and the appropriate training of equipment usage
  • Assisting with the development of lab manuals, lab set-ups, and planning
  • Ensuring smooth daily operations of instructional laboratories
  • Developing, overseeing, and maintaining Department inventory of equipment, supplies, and chemicals, as well as handling and disposing of potentially hazardous substances


Education / Experience

Master’s degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Science or Engineering (knowledge in experimental biology required)

A minimum of three years of experience working in an academic setting supporting relevant research, performing laboratory duties, and/or setting up and maintaining laboratories in the field


Other Qualifying Skills and Abilities

Experience in assisting research, managing all aspects of the daily operations of a laboratory, providing technical assistance, and participating in the maintenance and use of facility equipment.

  • Solid knowledge of health and safety aspects
  • Knowledge of working in clean environments and awareness of contamination management
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a team and independently
  • Strong sense of initiative and good judgment
  • Proficient in of Microsoft Office
