Research Assistant / Associate in Programmable Hardware Security

University of Cambridge

United Kingdom

Research Assistant £26,715 - £30,942 or Research Associate £32,816 - £40,322

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years.

* The Project *

Applications are invited for a Research Associate (PostDoc) to work on novel programmable hardware for application security to provide resilience to current and future attack techniques.

Our research group focuses on a number of approaches to increase performance and improve the reliability and security of applications. Recent work has developed The Guardian Council, a novel parallel architecture for security monitoring that detects security attacks as they occur, enabling evasive action to be taken. We have also developed a number of schemes for temporal memory safety (MarkUs, CHERIvoke, Cornucopia), to prevent use-after-free attacks in low-level code.

We are looking to complement our research in the field of programmable hardware security. We wish to further develop schemes for security monitoring in high-performance microprocessors, equipping our hardware with the ability to mitigate attacks in real time in addition to performing detection. The successful candidate will analyse programs and attack-detection schemes and develop novel hardware that can be programmed to carry out these defences by leveraging parallel execution.

* Research Group *

Our group is a team of PostDocs and PhD students investigating performance, reliability and security in future many-core systems. The position is within the Computer Architecture Research Group at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory. Collaboration with researchers at other universities and industry around the world is encouraged and there are strong links within the group with local companies.

* Candidates *

We seek candidates with a strong background in Computer Science with an interest in computer architecture and security. Applicants should hold a PhD or have equivalent experience, though those who are close to submitting a PhD will be considered. Knowledge of a related area is not essential but would be advantageous. Candidates should provide evidence of relevant work, where possible, and must demonstrate a desire to perform internationally-leading research and to publish in the top conferences in the area.

This position can be filled by an appropriate candidate at research assistant or research associate level, depending on relevant qualifications and experience. Appointment at research associate level is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience). Where a PhD has yet to be awarded the appointment will initially be made as a research assistant and amended to research associate when the PhD is awarded.

* More Information *

The funds are available for a start date on the 1st October 2020 but some flexibility on this can be arranged.
