At the Faculty of Engineering Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT), Research Unit ADVISE of the KU Leuven Technology Campus Geel, there is a full-time vacancy in the academic staff in the field of Robust digital-intensive circuits for applications in ionizing radiation. We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with an excellent research file, international experience and educational competencies in the field of electronics. The research within the Advanced Integrated Sensing Lab (ADVISE) at Technology Campus Geel focuses on the development of robust and radiation-resistant electronics. The research group enjoys international recognition for its expertise in modeling and design of integrated electronic circuits that withstand very high radiation doses. Such components find wide application in current and future nuclear (fission and fusion) reactors (eg ITER), particle physics experiments (such as installed on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) on CERN), aerospace, aviation, etc. medical imaging, nuclear safety etc. The group is a member of the worldwide CMS collaboration at CERN (CMS is one of the two largest experiments linked to the LHC, alongside ATLAS).

Investigation

You develop an international research program in the field of fast, robust and radiation-hard digital integrated systems and mixed analog-digital circuits for extreme nuclear applications. Possible research topics are the development of new techniques for clock and data reconstruction circuits, Digital PLLs (phase-locked loops), digitally integrated radiation hard designs, soft-error tolerant implementations, digital calibration techniques for mixed analog-digital systems, robust memories, time-based signal processing blocks, high -performing microprocessors and radiation-hard FPGA systems.

You work on electronic systems for data communication, instrumentation and digital signal processing in challenging applications such as experiments in particle physics, nuclear reactors, nuclear waste management and transport, aerospace and medical (nuclear) imaging. You have the necessary knowledge for the conceptual design, implementation and experimental verification with ionizing radiation of these systems and you have completed the design and production cycle of integrated and radiation-resistant components.

You support and develop radiation experiments for both internal research projects and collaborations with industrial partners. You also develop electronic solutions to support other research groups on campus. You strengthen the lab by attracting or acquiring additional research infrastructure.

You ensure international cooperation with academic partners, supervise PhD students and master theses and generate scientific output that meets the highest international standards. You strive for excellence in research and in this way contribute to the further development of the ADVISE research group. You work closely with the other ADVISE researchers to support current research projects and to set up future research projects.

You provide funding for applied research through both government funding and local and international partnerships with various industrial partners (including SMEs) through projects and services. You pay the necessary attention to the valorization of the results of your research into industry / government / society.


Education

You provide high-quality education in the domain of analogue and digital systems and of embedded electronics in the Bachelor and Master Industrial Engineering - Electronics-ICT, Electromechanics and Energy in the Faculty of Engineering Technology on Campus Geel, with a clear commitment to the quality of training as a whole. You also contribute to the pedagogical project of the faculty / university by supervising master theses and as a promoter of doctoral students.

You develop your education in accordance with the vision of KU Leuven on activating and research-based education and you make use of the opportunities for educational professionalization offered by the faculty and the university.

Your teaching assignment is determined in consultation on the basis of your specific profile. It is limited in size in the first years of your appointment. All professors are expected to also teach a number of basic subjects. In your further career too, the faculty pays a lot of attention to the balance between research and teaching time.

In addition to the teaching duties at Campus Geel, you may be asked to include a limited teaching assignment on another campus as part of the faculty's multi-campus model.

You maintain close contact with the local and international field.

You are actively involved in the promotion of the Faculty of Engineering Technology to future students and you participate in information and PR activities of the faculty.

You play an active role in the profile of the Faculty of Engineering Technology with regard to new students and the broad working field through participation in information and open days, networking moments and fairs, etc.


Profile

You hold a master's degree in industrial sciences electronics-ICT or master's degree in engineering sciences - electrical engineering or related, and a doctoral dissertation with a topic related to the research domain.

You have a strongly applied research file in the field. The research quality is evident from publications in leading international journals, books and / or proceedings from international conferences, as well as from international research experience and experience with valorization projects in collaboration with companies and research institutions. International experience is a plus.

A demonstrable network with relevant industrial and academic partners is particularly appreciated.

You have industrial experience in the sector of integrated electronics and / or radiation-resistant electronic systems, preferably in an international environment. Experience with radiation experiments is greatly appreciated.

You have demonstrable qualities for academic education. Education experience is a plus.

You have organizational skills and you are collegial. You also have managerial skills in a university context.

The administrative language of KU Leuven is Dutch. If you know little or no Dutch at recruitment, KU Leuven provides a training offer that must allow you to participate in board meetings.
