Position Overview

The University of Antwerp seeks a junior or senior professor to establish a new, forward-looking approach to sustainable construction in architecture. The role bridges technical construction knowledge and architectural design, with strong emphasis on circularity, bio-based materials, regenerative design, and resource-conscious building cultures.

The successful candidate will play a central role in shaping education, research, and industry engagement in sustainable construction and is expected to develop an independent research agenda, ideally including the establishment of a dedicated lab.


Key Focus Areas

  • Bio-based and circular construction materials

  • Circular components and construction processes

  • Design for disassembly

  • Regenerative and resilient design strategies

  • Integration of materials and systems within architectural design

  • Collaboration with applied engineering and industry partners


Core Responsibilities

Education (40%)

  • Teach materials, construction, and sustainability courses in architecture

  • Contribute to Bachelor courses (Construction 1 & 2) and Master courses (Advanced Construction, research seminars)

  • Participate in Master-level design studios

  • Supervise Master’s and PhD theses

  • Advance student-centred, competence-driven curricula with sustainability at the core

Research (40%)

  • Develop high-quality research in sustainable materials and construction

  • Initiate and manage national and international research projects

  • Secure external research funding

  • Publish in leading peer-reviewed journals

  • Build and maintain an international research network

  • Supervise PhD students and postdoctoral researchers

Service & Leadership (20%)

  • Participate in academic governance and committees

  • Contribute to societal engagement and professional outreach

  • Take on coordinating roles in education and research

  • Provide motivating, coaching-oriented leadership


Required Profile

  • PhD in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Engineering Science, or equivalent

  • Several years of postdoctoral experience and/or professional practice

  • Strong research profile in construction, materials, or sustainable design

  • Proven experience in research funding acquisition

  • Affinity with design-oriented architectural education

  • Leadership and organisational skills

  • Willingness to learn Dutch (CEFR B2; C1 required for programme coordination)

  • Experience in architectural or engineering practice is highly recommended


Appointment & Career Path

  • Position within Senior Academic Staff (ZAP)

  • Rank (Assistant, Associate, Professor, or Full Professor) based on experience

  • Junior appointments typically start as tenure-track Assistant Professor (5 years)

  • Senior appointments lead to permanent tenure after positive evaluation
