The Mechanical Engineering department currently has 43 professors, 4 lecturers, 27 staff, and several postdoctoral researchers and research assistants. There are more than 1200 undergraduate students and 300 graduate students. The department leads both the Mechanical and the Aerospace Engineering programs. The department also contributes to the Biomedical Engineering program. This position falls within the area of the Institut de valorisation des données (IVADO) in artificial intelligence sponsored by a significant grant of 93.6 M$ over 7 years from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund as well as by industrial and institutional partners. As Montreal is recognized as an international hub in the field of artificial intelligence research, this position is for a professor researcher in the Chemical Engineering Department, who will work in partnership with IVADO on important projects in the area of intelligent mechanical systems related to the exploitation of big data.



The successful candidate will be expected to carry out the duties of this position with a dynamic and creative approach. In particular, he or she will:

  • demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • supervise undergraduate and graduate students;
  • carry out innovative research projects;
  • obtain grants and contracts aimed at training highly qualified personnel through research work;
  • publish the scientific results of his or her research;
  • participate in the teaching and research activities of the Department;
  • collaborate with other research teams within Polytechnique Montréal or with other institutions;
  • contribute to the influence of Polytechnique Montréal in Québec and internationally.



The department is looking for a professor with excellent knowledge of the principles and technics of big data, learning and decision-making, as well as research experience in artificial intelligence, including autonomy, terrestrial/air transportation systems, innovative manufacturing systems, intelligent robotic systems or other mechanical systems with big data as source of decision. Applicants with expertise in areas of deep learning, data mining and artificial intelligence applied to other areas of mechanical or aerospace engineering would also be considered.

Successful candidates should hold a bachelor’s degree in engineering. They must hold a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or a related field. They must be registred as an engineer to the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ), or demonstrate their capacity to become a member before applying for tenure. They must demonstrate excellent research and teaching skills. Relevant industry experience is an asset. Since the teaching language is French, the selected person must have sufficient French speaking and writing ability shortly after taking office. Polytechnique Montréal will provide any necessary assistance and support to the candidate to become a registred engineer and to learn French.
