Professor in End-Of-Life Product Demanufacturing and Remanufacturing

Catholic University of Leuven

KU Leuven has a full-time academic vacancy in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Group T campus in Leuven. We are looking for internationally oriented candidates with an excellent interdisciplinary research record, with educational competencies within the field of mechanical design and project-based learning, and with a strong focus on applied research in collaboration with industry. The successful applicant will be appointed in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Technology of the Science, Engineering and Technology Group of KU Leuven. Research at the Department of Mechanical Engineering focuses on the main societal challenges: sustainability of energy supply, mobility, healthcare and industrial innovation. The department is involved in a large number of local, national and international research projects and has strong links with the technology transfer services of the university and with institutes for technology transfer on Flemish and European level. The department has about 45 professors and 400 total staff. The department is particularly active in spin-off creation. Our spin-offs include leading companies such as Materialise NV and Siemens Industry Software NV. The Life Cycle Engineering research group of the Department of Mechanical Engineering investigates and develops methods and techniques to assess and improve the sustainability of products, manufacturing processes and mechanical end-of-life treatment steps. The research group can build upon a solid research infrastructure, an extensive international network, connections with companies and nonprofit organizations, a stable offer of highly talented PhD students and a supportive work environment. The faculty of Engineering Technology organizes education in applied engineering programs. It relies on an extensive national and international network, both in the academic and business world.

The increasingly complex material mix used in e.g. electronics, vehicles and other tech products forms a major challenge for high-quality recycling in view of resource-efficient material circularity. Eco-innovative approaches therefore need to be developed that allow inverse manufacturing and mechanical separationof product components as well as remanufacturing into high-quality functional components.

You will therefore develop a research program at an international level in the field of de- and re-manufacturing, comprising both flexible and intelligent de- and re-manufacturing systems as well as product development support for future generation products. An intensive collaboration with colleagues in related fields, such as Life Cycle Assessment and manufacturing technologies is envisaged.

You engage in targeted scientific research, resulting in PhDs and publications that meet international standards and lead to broad international recognition.

You support or initiate a network of companies through the transfer of research results and by delivering industrial services, aimed at strengthening industrial innovation.

As part of your research program, you develop international partnerships, within the academic world as well as with industrial partners.

You are able to acquire competitive funding, both project-based government funding as well as industrial funding.

You strive for excellence and thus contribute to the international reputation of the research group and the faculty.

You pay the required attention to social valorisation of your research results.

You provide high-quality education for both bachelor and master students in the field of manufacturing and project-based learning, with a clear commitment to the quality of the program as a whole. All professors are expected to teach a few basic undergraduate courses.

You contribute to the faculty’s and the university’s pedagogical project through the supervision of student projects (for example bachelor’s and master’s theses) and by acting as a promotor of PhD students.

You develop your teaching in accordance with KU Leuven’s views on activating and research-based education and make use of the possibilities for educational professionalization offered by the faculty and the university.

Your teaching duties are determined in agreement and are based on your specific profile. The scope is limited in the first years of your appointment. In your further career, the faculty will also pay a great deal of attention to the balance between research and teaching time.

You are prepared to provide services to the scientific community, to society and to the university in function of the needs and your personal interests.

You develop a strong network and you maintain close contact with the regional and international industry.

You play an active part in promoting the Faculty of Engineering Technology towards new students and the wider professional field by participating in open days, networking events and fairs,...

You have a PhD in Engineering or an equivalent degree.

You have a strong research track record in the discipline, evidenced by publications or by research experience in industry. You have the ambition to contribute to the transfer of research results to industry and to society. International experience is an important advantage.

You have verifiable qualities related to academic education. Teaching experience is an advantage.

You possess organizational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You also possess leadership competencies in a university or industry context.
