The School of Engineering and Technology (SET) at the University of Washington Tacoma is announcing an exciting opportunity for assistant professors and an associate or full professor to assume a pioneering role in designing, building, and implementing a newly approved Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.  SET is a vibrant and rapidly growing school that is guided by the campus core values of excellence, community, diversity, and innovation in the South Puget Sound region.  We expect our faculty to have a strong commitment to working with underrepresented populations and enhancing the diversity of STEM education. A newly approved civil engineering program is also being implemented simultaneously.  A new building will house these programs is scheduled to be completed by 2023.

We are seeking applications for multiple tenure-track/tenured positions, including one Full/Associate Professor position, and up to three Assistant Professor positions for the new Mechanical Engineering program. These are full-time positions with a nine-month service period, beginning in September 2020.

The University of Washington Tacoma, one of three UW campuses, is an urban undergraduate and graduate-level campus that is changing the face of its region economically, culturally, and architecturally. The School of Engineering and Technology (SET), formerly known as the Institute of Technology, was created in 2001 through a public/private partnership to address the critical industry demand for baccalaureate and graduate-level computing and engineering professionals. SET's 850+ students are currently enrolled in four undergraduate degree programs: Electrical Engineering (being considered for ABET accreditation in Oct. 2019), Computer Engineering and Systems (ABET-accredited), Computer Science and Systems (ABET-accredited), and Information Technology (ABET-accredited), in addition to a Master of Science Degree in Computer Science and Systems, and a professional Master's Degree in Cybersecurity and Leadership, in partnership with UW Tacoma's Milgard School of Business. SET will be expanding its degree offerings with state approved funding to start Mechanical Engineering in Autumn 2020 and Civil Engineering in Autumn 2021. Our MS in Computer Science and Systems is also expanding by adding interdisciplinary, data-centric tracks that leverage the research strengths of other academic units on campus, particularly in Data Science, GIS, Bioinformatics, Cybersecurity, Distributed Systems, and Cyber-Physical Systems. New graduate programs under development are MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a Ph.D. in Computing. 

UW Tacoma is a 46-acre, urban-serving campus that currently serves approximately 5400 students and is comprised of award-winning architectural LEED-certified, repurposed warehouses amid the city's museum mile. A Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is required for all the positions. 

Candidates at the Professor or Associate Professor level should have an excellent track of achievements and leadership in research, teaching, and service at the level of a tenured professor. They should have an interest in education and research program developments and mentoring junior faculty members as documented in the cover letter and CV. 

Candidates at the Assistant professor level should have potential for excellence in teaching as documented in the teaching statement, and demonstrated scholarly research. Priority areas are thermal-fluids, mechanical design/manufacturing, material science, and robotics/controls, though qualified applicants in all areas of mechanical engineering will be considered.

 (1) A cover letter describing which position is being applied for and (i) academic qualifications, (ii) leadership, including their views on education and research program developments and mentoring junior faculty members (associate/full professor applicants only), (iii) professional experiences, (iv) how they will bring value to the development of the curricula of the new mechanical engineering program, (v) how they will develop a research program in mechanical engineering and interact with faculty in other programs at SET;

(2) A diversity statement describing how their teaching, service and/or scholarship has supported the success of students from racial, ethnic, and gender backgrounds that are underrepresented in their academic field. Applicants who have not yet had the opportunity for such experience should note how their work will further UW Tacoma's commitment to equity and inclusion;

(3) An outline of the candidate's research goals and plans;

 (4) Samples of the candidate's best 3 published research results;

(5) A description of teaching philosophy (including a list of courses the candidate is qualified to teach) and evidence of teaching effectiveness;
