Pay Range

$108,600 - $126,720 Annually

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to develop electromagnetic diagnostic hardware for in-situ characterization and nondestructive evaluation of advanced manufactured materials and concrete materials. You will be responsible for developing RF circuits and devices, antenna array and imaging systems. You will also be responsible for assessing electromagnetic techniques for ground penetrating radar applications.  This position is in the Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) group in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Directorate.

In this role you will 

  • Conduct original research in the fields of design of RF Circuits, antenna array, and electromagnetic design.
  • Apply electromagnetic techniques for subsurface characterization.
  • Develop hardware and numerical techniques for improving the state of the art in microwave nondestructive evaluation for advanced manufacturing.
  • Customize, design, analyze, and test microwave devices, circuits and antennas.
  • Publish research results in technical reports and peer-reviewed journals and present technical results at scientific conferences.
  • Work independently as part of a scientific team and collaborate with multi-disciplinary groups on writing successful proposals geared towards electromagnetic NDE methods for both Laboratory Directed Research & Development and external grant solicitations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • PhD in electrical engineering; or closely related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Fundamental knowledge in one or more of the following key areas:  RF hardware, microwave devices and antenna array.
  • Experience in computational electromagnetics or inverse problems and imaging.
  • Experience conducting research in electrical engineering or closely related field.
  • Experience in electromagnetics with emphasis in one or more of the following areas: electromagnetic pulsed systems and metamaterials.
  • Experience in electrical design of microwave devices using relevant software tools similar to ANSYS HFSS, CST Microwave Studio, COMSOL, or FEKO.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to create reports, publications and proposals, and to provide technical information and advice to management and other stakeholders, as well as interpersonal skills necessary to work in a diverse, multidisciplinary research team.
  • Experience working in programming languages such as Python or Matlab.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Knowledge of multi-physics applications such as microwave induced thermal curing of resins and advanced materials, and modeling of ultrasound-related measurements.
  • Practical design of microwave sensors and flexible microwave circuits.
  • Experience with low frequency electromagnetic methods such as electrical impedance and eddy current methods.
  • Knowledge of nondestructive evaluation and ground penetrating radar.

Position Information

This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years, open to those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
