Postdoctoral Researcher in nanoenergetics

Date 27-3-2019

Place : University of Toulouse, Laboratoire d’Analyse et d’Architecture des Systèmes (LAAS), Department of Energy Management.

Position : Research positions

LAAS is a CNRS laboratory and also a community of bold researchers where science meets micro and nano technology in close connection with society. We are committed to identifying and solving grand societal challenges and building an innovative future. LAAS has eight departments with nearly 200 doctoral students and a staff of more than 400, of which 300 are researchers or professors. Our campuses are located in Toulouse, south of France. The LAAS portfolio covers fields from physics to engineering and information sciences. In parallel with basic research, we develop ideas and technologies further into innovations and services. We develop integrated solutions from care of the elderly to space robotics.

The Department of Energy Management is looking for a highly motivated and talented Postdoctoral Researcher to join our research work.

JOB DESCRIPTION : Postdoctoral Researchers in nanoenergetics and pyrotechnical MEMS

You will be a key member of a research group (NEO) seeking the exploitation of nanoenergetic materials to develop integrated pyrotechnic solutions for civil and defense needs.

Faculty and staff at NEO-group have joined efforts to form an interdisciplinary team with an overriding focus on Nano Energetic Materials. NEO ‘s research addresses emerging nanomaterials. It also targets the military’s need for more stable, more effective, less sensitive, and more easily processed energetic materials for use in ordinance. The team awarded 2.5 M€ grant from European Research Council to study multifunctional nano-energetic materials and develop a variety of characterization techniques to study combustion and formation of Hot-Spots in such materials.

Your goal as a Postdoctoral Researcher will be to develop this field of research. This is an exciting and rare opportunity to be involved in a research topic with high expected societal impact for civilian and military infrastructures and aviation.

RESEARCH GROUP : NEO at the LAAS-CNRS, University of Toulouse

This research position will be supported by the NEO research team at LAAS, which is led by Dr. Carole Rossi. The group mainly focuses on the study of physical and thermal properties of various metal/oxide two-dimensional layered materials for energetics application. More concretely, research is aimed at creating tailored energetic materials. Improved performance, sensitivity, toxicity and lifetime are key drivers for these new materials. We are also interested in developing disruptive materials that are tunable, switchable, and multi-functional. Both top-down and bottom-up fabrication approaches are being explored. These include additive manufacturing methods and vapor-deposition methods. We also hope to extend to other synthesis in the future to be defined.

Our characterization efforts are primarily aimed at improving our ability to study initiation, aging and combustion mechanisms in nano energetic materials. A combination of commercial equipment are currently being used to study the flame propagation and ignition process. We intend to develop new diagnostic and characterization benches to improve our ability to study energetic materials during dynamic events which is not the case yet.

Numerous energetic devices are produced by integrating nano energetic materials into MEMS. These approaches involve understanding the interface between energetic materials and silicon, as well as the development of novel MEMS technology enabling to deposit safely the energetic layers. Applications include all areas of pyrotechnics.

  • PhD degree in material science, combustion phenomena or related topics is favorable for the position
  • Excellent knowledge of energetic materials, characterization thereof
  • Proven track record in major scientific research
  • Good command of English is necessary

Postdoctoral Researcher position will be filled for 1 year with an extension possibility (twice). The expected starting salary is ranging from 2700 – 4000 €/month, depending on experience and qualifications. Salary will increase according to responsibilities and performance over time. The contract includes holiday bonus, and France has a comprehensive social security system. Preferable starting time is before dec. 2019 but can be also negotiable.
