University of Auckland

New Zealand

The Opportunity

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to join the group as a Research Fellow (Postdoctoral Researcher) on a 2 year fixed term contract.

About the Role

The research in this project will focus on creating functional surfaces to deliver signals to cells with the goal to enhance the understanding of both stem cells and differentiated cells.

The successful candidate will work alongside PhD students to progress some of our material developments to in-vitro cell culture. The work is likely to lead to high-impact publications and scientific publications and local and international conferences. The role also includes teaching into our Chemical and Materials Engineering program, an excellent experience for academic career progression.

Skills and Experience

The successful candidate will be excited to work in an interdisciplinary project and:

  • Hold a PhD degree in a relevant discipline with a willingness to learn and apply new techniques.
  • Has a proven track-record of research.
  • Has excellent communication skills (written and oral), is team orientated and has good organisation skills.
  • Has teaching experience or an interest in developing skills in teaching and supervision.

Ideal candidates must have experience in some or all of the below:

  • Material chemistry/surface chemistry
  • Mammalian cell culture and immunostaining
  • Polymer synthesis and characterisation
  • Electrophysiology of electrically active cells, such as cardiomyocytes and neurons
  • Characterisation methods such as XPS, AFM, TEM, QCM-D, fluorescence microscopy, rheology, electrochemistry

If you are an ambitious PhD graduate interested in developing new smart surfaces to provide detailed control over cell-surface interactions, then this may be the project for you.

The Research Team

Jenny Malmström studied bioengineering in Sweden and did a PhD in nanoscience in Denmark before moving to Auckland, New Zealand. She is running a diverse research group at the department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Auckland, New Zealand’s leading University. You have a chance to join a young new science team, which is highly interdisciplinary and internationally connected, while experiencing the amazing lifestyle in Auckland – surrounded by beaches and forests.

How to Apply

Inquiries may be made to Dr Jenny Malmström (j.malmstrom@auckland.ac.nz)
