About This Opportunity

The School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering is seeking an enthusiastic Postdoctoral Research Fellow/ Research Officer  to manage and undertake research in support of an industry funded project being run by Dr Zhongwei Chen and Professor Victor Rudolph.

The successful applicant will be involved in the development and testing of the mechanical and petrophysical properties of fractured coals at various scales using various laboratory techniques, and then applying the results to investigate the response of coal seam gas (CSG) boreholes to different drilling designs and production controls as well as the corresponding CSG well performance.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

To be successful in this position you should possess a PhD (or have submitted a PhD) in the area of civil/geotechnical engineering, mining/petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, materials engineering, or related field such as applied physics or mathematics.

You should have demonstrated competency in:

  • geomaterial properties testing and the design of advancing laboratory testing techniques
  • behaviours of the fractured geomaterials in response to mechanical loading and fluids flow in fractures (or small pores), preferably related to sedimentary rocks and;
  • development of coupled numerical simulation, preferably using the discrete element method.  

We are seeking someone with experience in supervising honours and Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students and the ability to publish in high quality outlets and prepare effective reports that document research findings for both internal and external audiences.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position until March 2022 at Academic level A.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $69,342 - $92,782, plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $81,131 - $108,555.
