A full-time postdoctoral Research Associate position in Pavement Engineering is available in Dr. Kutay’s group in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Michigan State University. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing algorithms to estimate the investment that would be required to achieve certain highway system performance levels or to estimate the highway system performance that would result given various investment levels. The project that the candidate will be working on is funded by the U.S. DOT Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The objective of the project is to develop a tool for FHWA internal use to compute the benefits resulting from potential highway improvements, quantifying three types of benefits to highway users (travel time, operating costs, and safety), benefits to highway agencies (reduced maintenance costs), two external dis-benefits (damage caused by vehicle emissions and damage due to carbon dioxide emissions) and remaining service life of improvements at the end of the analysis period.
Dr. Kutay’s team will work closely with the successful candidate to meet the project goals and help the trainee achieve their career goals. The appointment will be initially for one year with the possibility of an additional year based on satisfactory performance and continuation of funding.
