The Applied Materials Division at Argonne National Laboratory invites applications for a Postdoctoral Appointee to support cutting-edge research on simulation-driven composite materials discovery. The successful candidate will conduct large-scale simulation campaigns to generate data for a materials property database and will contribute to the development of AI models for composite design.
Working within a multidisciplinary team of engineers, materials scientists, and AI experts, the appointee will:
Build and execute finite element simulations for composites with arbitrary microstructures.
Predict homogenized material properties using advanced computational tools.
Develop AI/ML workflows that propose composite structures given target mechanical or physical properties.
Prepare high-quality technical reports, conference papers, and peer-reviewed journal articles.
Present research findings at scientific meetings and conferences.
This is a full-time, on-site position based at Argonne’s campus in Lemont, Illinois (5 days per week).
Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (within the last 0–5 years) in:
Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
Demonstrated experience with the finite element method.
Proficiency in C++ and Python.
Experience using Unix-based operating systems.
Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to present to diverse audiences.

Ability to work on-site at Argonne five days per week.
Experience with MOOSE (Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment).
Experience with PyTorch.
Familiarity with HPC job scheduling systems.

The expected hiring range for this position is $70,758 – $117,925.
Final salary offers are based on factors including candidate qualifications, scope of role, internal equity, and external market comparisons.
