Postdoctoral position in Machine Intelligence

Research Group active on Artificial Intelligence for Mechatronic Systems within the Faculty of Engineering at Ghent University is looking for outstanding applicants for postdoctoral positions.

About us

The candidate will be directly embedded in an international research group that work together as a team and will have the possibility to collaborate with many other people active at Ghent University both associated with Flanders Make and IMEC. The research group is situated in Ghent, a lively city at the heart of Europe (https://visit.gent.be/en/HOME).

Job description

To increase the technological basis of machines combined with machine learning, data analytics, and model-based reinforcement learning we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher with a strong track record in artificial intelligence within mechatronic and/or robotic applications, having knowledge on deep reinforcement learning techniques, data analytics, electromechanical physical modeling, and optimal control methods. The mission of the candidate is to intertwine the hardware (mechatronics/robotics) of manufacturing industries as well as associated behavioral physics-based models closely with artificial intelligence to increase their operational efficiency, performance and reliability. You will be embedded in an internationally competitive research group, will interact with business developers and will cooperate with researchers active within the Ghent University EEDT research group (http://www.eedt.ugent.be) member of Flanders Make (www.flandersmake.be), and the Ghent University IDLab (https://www.ugent.be/ea/idlab/en) member of IMEC (https://www.imec-int.com/en/home).

  • You will set out a technological basis for combining data analytics with physics-based electromechanical models in the context of motion systems.
  • You will set out a technological basis for combining optimal control theory with reinforcement learning techniques.
  • You will map the industrial needs within the Flemish manufacturing sector with respect to machine intelligence.
  • You will build a software platform that is able to handle (big) models and (big) data originating from real use cases within the research group and within industry.
  • You will engage and initiate innovative approaches towards digital condition monitoring of motion systems and smart control of their operations.
  • You will cooperate with researchers active both on the hardware and software side of electromechanical systems within the manufacturing industry.
  • You will map your developed approaches with the industrial needs and initiate collaborations with industry, other research groups and research institutions, both within Flanders as on the European level.
  • You will monitor evolutions in the Flemish manufacturing and initiate routes towards future machine intelligence.

We offer:

  • A 3 year period postdoctoral position with a competitive salary.
  • The candidate will have access to state-of-the-art tools and facilities, a network of Flemish companies active in the manufacturing industry, and the possibility to collaborate with other research groups.
  • The candidate will be directly embedded in an international research group of +20 people that work together as a team and will have the possibility to collaborate with many other people active at UGent both associated with Flanders Make and IMEC.
  • Starting date: as soon as possible, but flexible.

Profile of the candidate

  • You hold a PhD, or should be expecting a PhD in the near future.
  • You have experience in or understanding of electromechanical/mechatronic/robotic systems.
  • You have experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, modelling of dynamical systems, optimization techniques.
  • You have documented research experience and publication record.
  • You have minimum 4 years or more experience in a highly renowned research institution.
  • Motivation to work as an active member on an interdisciplinary project.
  • You have a team player mindset, a strong personality and work in a result-oriented manner.
  • You are creative, willing to work in a multidisciplinary context.
  • You are proficient in oral and written English and have strong communication skills.
  • You are able to extend your network and able to talk on technical matters.
