This four-year project is funded by the Swedish Competence Centre in Road Technology (KCV) and aims to optimize the use of recycled asphalt and marginal quality aggregates in road construction and maintenance.
The doctoral student will:
Develop experimental and numerical tools to evaluate the mechanical properties of recycled asphalt and asphalt with marginal aggregates
Extend the spherical indentation test for asphalt materials to characterize recycled and marginal materials under varying environmental conditions
Link local material measurements to mixture performance and refine methodology
Employ multi-scale numerical modelling using the Finite Element method to connect local properties to macroscale asphalt pavement performance
This project is a collaboration between KTH and VTI – the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute. Employment will initially be at KTH for the first two years (licentiate degree) with the possibility to continue at VTI for the remaining two years while continuing doctoral studies at KTH.

Applicants must have:
Completed a second-cycle degree (Master’s) or equivalent qualifications (240 higher education credits, including 60 second-cycle credits)
English proficiency equivalent to English B/6

Employment as a doctoral student is contingent on admission to postgraduate education
Full-time doctoral education is typically four years; licentiate employment may last two years
Tasks within the role may include training and administrative work (up to 20% of time)
Employment contracts are renewable annually, for a maximum of two years at a time
