Postdoctoral Fellow in Mixed-Culture Microbial Processes for Resource Recovery

A position is available for a Postdoctoral Fellow within the Process and Environmental Technology Lab (PETLab) at the Department of Chemical Engineering of KU Leuven university, location Campus De Nayer, Sint-Katelijne-Waver (Belgium).

Responsibilities

You are expected to support the ongoing research activities related to the design and optimisation of novel mixed-culture microbial processes for the production of renewable chemicals and energy carriers. You will contribute to several ongoing projects related to resource recovery from waste and wastewater, e.g., by assisting in the scientific coordination of the projects, by mentoring PhD students, and by publishing research results in high-impact scientific journals. Additionally, you will be involved in working out and writing novel research proposals in close collaboration with the PIs of this research line. The selected candidate is expected to apply at the earliest opportunity for a postdoctoral mandate at FWO (junior postdoc) or an MSCA European Individual Fellowship, always with KU Leuven-PETLab as host institution (we will provide all the necessary support). Apart from supporting ongoing research, you will also have the autonomy to work on your own research interests in collaboration with the PIs and other members of our group.

Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with a PhD in Bioscience Engineering, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or equivalent, and having experience in microbiology, biotechnology and process design.
 
Candidates who have worked during their MSc, PhD or previous postdoctoral research in the following fields are highly encouraged to apply: 
  • Novel bioprocessing and biotechnology
  • Microbiology and development of microbial processes for resource recovery and environmental applications (e.g. valorisation of organic waste streams)
Demonstrable knowledge in molecular identification techniques and bioinformatics is a strong plus.
 
A successful candidate should have an excellent scientific track record, which is exemplified, e.g., by a strong publication record in high-impact international journals. Additionally, the candidate should be fluent in English (written and verbal communication), self-motivated, passionate and great interpersonal skills and willing to work at interdisciplinary boundaries. Experience in grant writing is a strong plus.

Offer

We offer a position as postdoctoral fellow within one of Europe’s leading research universities. You will work in a dynamic international research team at the KU Leuven Engineering Technology Campus De Nayer, located near the city of Mechelen. The initial duration of the position will be 1 year, with the possibility to be extended (based on a positive evaluation of the candidate and the successful application of research grants).
