The Opportunity

The School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering has an opportunity for a Postdoctoral Fellow. You will conduct research in the field of life cycle sustainability assessment. This is a key role in supporting research projects as part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers in life cycle sustainability assessment of thermoforming packaging technologies. This is a hands-on position which will require working with other researchers and industry partners to develop sustainability indicators, collect data, carry out e-LCA, LCC, s-LCA. In this role you will be working on a project that will be undertaken within the Sustainable Manufacturing and Life Cycle Engineering Research Group @ UNSW (www.lceresearch.unsw.edu.au) and the associated industry partner organisation.

This position will give you the opportunity to develop your research skills and output through your contribution to the writing of scientific papers and reports for international journals, participating in conferences and workshops, supervising students, and actively engaging with industry partners.

The role of Post-doctoral Fellow reports to Professor Sami Kara with a dotted line to the project steering committee and has no direct reports.

  • Salary, Level A - $100,318 to $107,299 per annum + 17% superannuation
  • Full time
  • Fixed-term contract – 12 months with possible 24-month extension

Skills & Experience

  • A degree and/or PhD in related discipline, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through a combination of education, training, or hands-on experience.
  • Prior experience in carrying out environmental life cycle assessment (e-LCA).
  • Prior experience in carrying out life cycle costing (LCC).
  • Prior experience in carrying out social life cycle assessment (s-LCA).
  • Prior experience in packaging industry and packaging materials
  • Knowledge of research protocols, experimental design, and planning as involved in developing research projects and reporting against milestones.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
  • Excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail and the ability to liaise effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and productively within a team, but also to take initiative and work independently while managing competing demands.
  • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to communicate and interact with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
  • Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
