Your Tasks
You will:
- Design and develop electrode matrices for in-ear sensing (dry electrodes for EEG, EOG, and EMG).
- Integrate multimodal sensors (PPG and IMU) into earbud prototypes.
- Develop integration technologies for embedding electronics into soft polymer earbud structures.
- Optimise wearability and user comfort while ensuring high-quality signal acquisition.
- Design and evaluate biosignal amplifier circuits.
- Conduct signal quality analysis and contribute to improving signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and robustness against motion artifacts.
- Work closely with other teams on data acquisition protocols and sensor calibration.
- Document designs, prepare technical reports, and contribute to scientific publications and demonstrators.
About the Project
CMST (an imec-associated laboratory at Ghent University) is seeking a motivated researcher to join a team working on advanced wearable technologies for cognitive and physiological state monitoring.
This role is part of the PADRE project, which aims to develop next-generation multimodal sensing platforms for real-time monitoring of manual task execution and cognitive states in high-stakes environments.
You will contribute to the design, prototyping, and validation of in-ear sensing devices that integrate:
- Dry electrodes
- EEG sensors
- EOG sensors
- EMG sensors
- PPG sensors
- IMU sensors
The goal is to enable unobtrusive cognitive state assessment.
What We Are Looking For
Applicants should have:
- A Master's degree in:
- Electronics Engineering
- Physics Engineering
- Computer Engineering
- Microsystems Engineering
- Biomedical Engineering
- Or a related field
You should also have:
- Expertise in sensor design and integration, preferably for wearable or biomedical devices.
- Familiarity with electrophysiological signal acquisition (EEG, EOG, EMG) and signal processing.
- Experience with:Strong problem-solving skills.
- PCB design
- Embedded electronics
- Measurement setups
- Laboratory characterisation techniques
- Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team.
- Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
The following are considered advantages:

What We Can Offer You
- A full-time doctoral fellowship.
- An initial appointment of 12 months, renewable following a positive evaluation to a maximum of 48 months.
- Earliest contract start date: 1 September 2026.
- A fellowship amount equal to 100% of the net salary of an AAP member under equivalent family circumstances.
- Fellowship amount determined according to family status and seniority by the Team Personnel Administration.
- A doctoral fellowship that satisfies the applicable regulations is exempt from personal income tax.
