Postdoc with Focus on Anodes for Sodium Ion Batteries

Uppsala University

Sweden

Uppsala University is a broad research university with a strong international standing. The task is to conduct research and education of the highest quality and to cooperate with society in various ways. Our most important asset is all the individuals who, with their curiosity and commitment, make Uppsala University one of the country's most exciting workplaces. Uppsala University has 44,000 students, 7,100 employees and a turnover of SEK 7 billion.

Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the field of chemistry. The department has more than 230 employees and has sales of just over SEK 220 million. The department's seven programs carry out very successful research of a high international class. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has educational assignments in engineering and civil engineering programs as well as master's programs. More information can be found on our website.

The Structural Chemistry program at the Department of Chemistry - Ångström has for many years focused on the development of materials and applications in the battery field: Ångström Advanced Battery Center. We develop new electrode and electrolyte materials, characterize them, improve the materials in terms of battery performance and study basic chemical properties in batteries using both experimental and theoretical methods. The research is thus both basic and applied.

Special Subject Description: The primary focus of the project is the development of anode materials such as hard carbon and alloy anodes for sodium-ion batteries. Studies of new materials and studies of other components (eg cathodes, binders, electrolyte, etc.) can also be undertaken in order to further develop the research field. In order to improve the performance of the batteries, electrochemical measurements and various spectroscopic techniques will be used to study reactions within the system.

Tasks: The research is conducted at Uppsala University in close collaboration with colleagues at Ångström Advanced Battery Center. The main task will be to conduct research on technologies involving sodium-ion batteries. Specifically, this will involve the use of a variety of electrochemical measurement techniques and spectroscopic methods (eg X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, etc.) to study promising anodes for these systems and also investigate other important cellular components.

A postdoctoral candidate is expected to conduct high-quality research with the aim of publishing the results in high impact journals or communicating the results via conferences. Teaching may be included in the duties, but not more than one fifth of the working time.

Eligibility Requirements: In order to qualify for the post as a postdoc, the doctoral degree, or a foreign degree that is deemed to correspond to the doctorate in either chemistry, technology, or physics, or related subjects must be passed. In particular, they will be eligible for a doctoral degree no longer than three years before the end of the application period. Exceptions may occur if there are special reasons why the degree was older than three years. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, trust assignments within trade unions etc.

The service requires experience in battery research and working in a lab environment as well as expertise in electrochemical methods.

The assessment of the applications is primarily based on the applicant's ability to conduct independent research based on scientific skill. Greater emphasis is placed on the quality of individual scientific work than on the volume of publications. The candidate must also have excellent written and oral ability to communicate in English.

Desirable / Merit: Knowledge in material characterization such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a merit.

We will place great emphasis on personal fitness. Consideration will be given to ex. good collaboration, drive and independence as well as how the applicant is judged, through his experience and skills, to supplement and strengthen the work within the program and contribute to its future development.

Uppsala University values the qualities that equal gender distribution and diversity add to the business. We therefore like to see applicants of all genders and with different birth backgrounds, functionality and life experience.

Salary: Individual salary setting is applied.

Admission: 2019-10-01 or by arrangement.

Type of Employment: Temporary employment for two years.

Scope of Employment: 100%

Information about the employment is provided by Reza Younesi (reza.younesi@kemi.uu.se).
