Please note that this position can be filled at post-doctoral or senior post-doctoral level, depending on qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

Position summary

The Science Foundation Ireland funded Confirm Centre for Smart Manufacturing is a consortium led by University of Limerick including the Tyndall National Institute, University College Cork, Cork Institute of Technology, National University of Ireland Galway, Athlone Institute of Technology, Maynooth University and Limerick Institute of Technology. The Centre comprises of more than 200 researchers in smart manufacturing, including 106 new appointments, cross the partner institutions. The Centre is supported by 42 Industry partners, which include technology providers and manufacturing companies from the Multi-National Corporation (MNC) and Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) sectors across Ireland.

CONFIRM’s vision is to take a system’s level approach to smart manufacturing rather than only focusing on specific aspects of smart manufacturing such as 3D printing, advanced materials, continuous processes, etc. Smart manufacturing aims at integrating IT systems in manufacturing environments with the operating systems that have traditionally managed manufacturing processes. This integration will provide IT systems with process and machine data to an unprecedented extent that allows enhanced decision making, more flexible control approaches, improved logistics, batch-size of one, life-time product monitoring, etc. Key topics include new electronic devices, wireless networking, edge/cloud computing, software engineering, data analytics and artificial intelligence, enabling novel concepts such as the industrial Internet of Things, digital twin, and edge computing.

The UCC research activities within the Confirm Centre are hosted within the School of Computer Science and Information Technology, which is located in UCC’s Western Gateway Building. UCC is now seeking a Post-Doctoral Researcher/Senior Post-Doctoral Researcher for an industry collaborative project within Confirm targeting wireless factory automation. The specific focus of the research is modelling and simulation of, and experimentation with next generation machine-to-machine (M2M) communication and wireless networking technologies that support control and process automation applications in smart manufacturing.

The project is particularly interested in assessing the use of advanced 4G and new 5G wireless technologies as well as other wide area wireless technologies for smart manufacturing applications. Reliability and ultra-low end-to-end delay are key performance criteria for such networking technologies. They also must be able to operate in dense deployments and in a scalable manner. The researcher will both model and simulate a range of wireless communication technologies that are in use or have potential use in industrial applications as well as deploy experimental systems using prototype wireless technologies within a factory environment.

The successful applicant will be expected to write scientific publications associated with their work and travel to international conferences, workshops, industry meetings, proposal and project meetings. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to the development of the Internet of Things research agenda within the school in conjunction with the PI and other academic staff and researchers.
