Post Doc in AI related to Learning and Reasoning

Catholic University of Leuven Department of Computer Science

Belgium

The lab for Declarative Languages and Artificial Intelligence (DTAI) of the Department of Computer Science of the KU Leuven is one of the leading research groups for artificial intelligence, machine learning and data science. DTAI’s machine learning group counts three faculty members (Luc De Raedt, Hendrik Blockeel and Jesse Davis), one research manager, around 6 post-docs and over 30 doctoral students. DTAI is internationally renowned for its expertise in integrating different forms of learning and reasoning, statistical relational learning, probabilistic programming, inductive programming, inductive databases, neuro-symbolic computation, automating data science, and constraint programming. Next to fundamental research in machine learning and data mining, the DTAI group applies the developed techniques to concrete cases situated in intensive care monitoring, predictive maintenance, smart self-diagnosis, mechatronics, robot manipulation and navigation, natural language processing, smart electronics, sports analytics, etc. For these applications, DTAI cooperates with other groups and companies from strategically chosen research areas.

Project

At the time of writing we are looking for collaborators on projects that involve fundamental research in AI / learning and reasoning / data science, with a clear application potential.

Research will be conducted on the following topics:
1) Automating data science, where the focus is on democratizing data science methods in the context of spreadsheets;
2) Integrating operations research with machine learning, and using machine learning techniques  in the context of combinatorial optimisation, learning constraints and preference functions, and applying the resulting techniques to transportation and logistics;
3) Integrating learning and reasoning paradigms, in particular methods for neuro-symbolic computation, probabilistic (logic) programming, reinforcement learning and planning.

Please note that these positions all aim at integrating various learning and reasoning paradigms, which is the next frontier in AI, the third wave of AI, and which goes beyond the typical deep learning only, computer vision or natural language processing projects, which often focus on specific datasets. Our vision is very much in line with that of CLAIRE, the Confederation of Laboratories for AI Research in Europe, see claire-ai.org for more details.

Profile

DTAI is always looking for excellent Phd students. The ideal candidate has a master degree in Computer Science or Artificial Intelligence, and has excellent programming skills, is proficient in oral and written English, possesses excellent communication skills, multi-tasking skills, and is team-oriented, proactive and result driven.

Offer

A full time PhD scholarship of up to 4 years (renewable every year).

A full time Post-doctoral position of up to 3 years (renewable every year).

The positions can start immediately, and positions will be filled as soon as suitable candidates are found. Interested candidates should send their CV, a motivation, their transcripts, and  optionally contact information of 2 or 3 references.

A stimulating environment at Europe's most innovative university, in a well-equipped, experienced and internationally oriented research unit.

The research will be based at the Department of Computer Science at the Arenberg Campus in Heverlee (close to the center of Leuven).
