Project description

Applications are invited for a postgraduate researcher to join a research project in the Integrated Nanophotonics group at the University of Southampton. The aim of this project is to design, fabricate and investigate experimentally new types of nano-optical devices that are controlled using phase change materials. Research in the group aims to explore fundamental physics and develop new applications of light in nanostructured environments, including high-index semiconductors, plasmonic nanoantennas and metamaterials. The laboratory is equipped with state of the art equipment and has access to world-leading nanofabrication facilities.

A fully funded PhD place on this project is available for UK applicants. The project involves experimental research using the state of the art Zepler clean room facilities in Southampton. Optical experiments will be done in a photonics research laboratory equipped with a Coherent Chameleon ultrafast laser, supercontinuum light sources for advanced spectroscopy and a Neaspec scanning near-field microscopy tool. We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with good experimental research skills and a degree in physics, photonics engineering or another relevant subject. This project focuses on experimental nano-optics research with a component in theoretical and numerical modelling, which, depending on the interests of the applicant could also include new methods from deep learning and AI developed in our group (Nano Lett. 2020, 20, 329). We work together with collaborators in France and Spain and activities will involve short research visits to these groups.

Entry Requirements

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Closing date: applications should be received no later than 31 August 2020 for standard admissions, but later applications may be considered depending on the funds remaining in place.

Funding: full tuition fees for EU/UK students plus for UK students, an enhanced stipend of £15,009 tax-free per annum for up to 3.5 years.
