The Department of Chemical Engineering, University College London (UCL), is seeking a Graduate Student for fluid dynamic and mixing studies on non-Newtonian suspensions relevant to complex oral health products. The studies will involve both experimental investigations and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling of a mixer. Experimentally, laser-based flow diagnostics will be used to investigate velocity and concentration fields. For the numerical simulations a commercial code will be used. The studentship is funded by an EPSRC Case award supported by GSK.


Studentship Description

The candidate will have or be expected to obtain an excellent first degree in Chemical Engineering or a related subject area. Specific interest in or previous work on multiphase flows, mixing and laser-based flow diagnostics, flow visualization and CFD would be an advantage.


Person Specification

The PhD will be linked to a £2 Million EPSRC project on Complex ORAL health products (CORAL): Characterisation, modelling and manufacturing challenges. The aim is to introduce new fundamental insights into complex oral health formulations, using as an exemplar non-aqueous pastes, and to overcome the related high-impact manufacturing challenges. The project is a collaboration between the UCL Departments of Chemical and Mechanical Engineering and of Mathematics and is supported by GSK, Xaar and the Centre for Process Innovation.
